We had come to Sister Bay for Al Johnson's but they had an almost hour long wait, so we drove back in the other direction just looking for some place that had breakfast. Carroll House was the first place we saw. Stepping inside, there are Carroll House t-shirts for sale on the wall that read: "Just Say No To Goats On Grass" which was clever and obviously they are trying to compete with Al Johnson's.
There was only bar seating available when we walked in, so we chose to just sit there. Which was fine, except, I did not appreciate that my dining space was also the bus and wait staff's table for writing out other people's checks, stacking glasses away and other just completely unnecessary things to be doing in front of your customer's while they eat. I get it if they're trying to go for the cute "diner" feel, but then go for it. Everything felt really outdated and dirty. It felt like the interior hasn't been updated since 1983. The food? Meh. It was just okay. And the coffee was pretty terrible. Nothing exceptional. Certainly not famous. I would probably never choose to...
Read moreWe were there on sept. 13th, 2022. Place was crowded. They took our name and waited outside till a table was ready. No big deal. Within 10 minutes they called our name. There was 3 tables available. When the host saw our service dog he strongly suggested we sit outside. I told him no. We could see he was trying to figure out which table he wanted to put us because of the dog. . There was a table right as we came in, next to a wall. I immediately told him we will take that table.I could tell by his expression on his face he was not happy. We sat down and our dog immediately laid down by the wall. He wasn’t disturbing anyone or in anyones way. We noticed 2 couples that came in after us had menu’s and coffee. I had to ask. Once we ordered, food came quickly and was good. I think your employees should be informed when a customer comes in with a service dog they should be treated the same as all other customers. One of your customers turned to us and thanked my husband and...
Read moreWe chose the Carol House restaurant as a back up because the place with the goats on the roof had a 95 minute wait.
It was a mixed bag experience. First of all, the serving staff are what is keeping this place afloat. They are quick, friendly, and attentive. Overall, five star service.
The dining room is tiny and cramped, with tables elbowed up next to each other. It is also very loud. We had to raise our voices most of the time to just hear each other across the small table.
Unfortunately, the food isn’t that great. I was stunned that an vegetable omelette could be almost completely devoid of flavor. The same was true for the Eggs Benedict. Shockingly, it was the most flavorless hollandaise sauce we’ve ever experienced. And, the hashbrowns were burnt to a crisp. My son’s pancakes were devoured quickly, and they were generous with the chocolate chips.
The best thing we could say about the food is that it was edible. There are some hits and some misses, and this felt like a miss on...
