I simply can’t recommend this place anymore. I’ve been visiting this location for the past several years (and have one to the Newington location going back over 20 years). The food quality just seems to be a missing the mark on the last couple of visits. Also, I just don’t get the recent changes (some examples below)
First: The prices have gone up quite a bit. I would be ok with this as I know costs have increased, but with the price increase, it seems that the quality of the food has gone down. Steaks still seem good, but the chicken and shrimp fajitas lack flavor (had more of a boiled taste than a grilled one).
Second: My wife and I would almost always get the Chef Armando's Fajitas for 2 while our two kids would get what they wanted. They have now done away with the “for 2” option, so if we want to those fajitas, we have to order two separate single orders. Now the cost is much higher (with us getting seemingly the same amount of food).
Third: On our last visit, rather than offering chips and salsa, they brought out some other larger item which tasted horrible. Someone else stated it was a tostada, but I don’t think that was what it was. I asked if we could have the regular chips instead. The waiter stated that they could give them to us, but only the first basket would be free and each subsequent basket would have a cost. Are you kidding me! Are tortilla chips now a profit center for you guys? And here is the kicker, there were 4 of us at the table, and they brought out a small oblong basket of chips (think of a basket that might hold a single hot dog at a diner). If you are going to limit things, then give an appropriate amount based on the number of people at the table. If I had dined alone, I would have gotten the same basket (which would have been fine for 1 person). But with multiple people eating, you still give that small basket and make them pay for another one? Just ridiculous.
I haven’t been to the Newington location in a couple of years. Maybe we’ll give them a shot next time and see if they run things differently, but we won’t be returning to the...
Read moreLooks like a Mexican place but the taste of the food is not what is expected from a well known Mexican restaurant, is so sad this place changed so much since when they opened their doors.
At the beginning when this place opened it was real authentic Mexican food, now the food tastes like going to a fast food place, actually taco bell food and chipotle taste better and you get more food for the prices.
This restaurant prices were high, but I still ordered the food because I was hungry and did not want to keep looking for a different spot, when I received my food the rice almost did not have any flavor, the rice was dry and it may have been old, the sauce had a bad weird taste, change the sauce and was okay but not what was expected, the refried beans where not what you usually expect and a little gooey, the only thing fresh was the pico de gallo and sour cream, also the fried ice cream was smaller that before and the tortilla used for the ice cream bowl was over cooked almost burned or they fried it again to look like it was fresh, this is actually really bad for this restaurant, also for most Mexican restaurants, and other restaurants lately they change menus or change the chef to save money or change the menu to more expensive selections and for less quality ingredients.
I went to this place because it was the closest to where I was located at the time but my usual spot is Puerto Vallarta in Newington CT, has better fresh ingredients, also the service and atmosphere is better, the amount of food and prices are alright, but there is Plaza Azteca in Newington CT, and also this authentic little Mexican restaurant in Broad Street in Hartford not sure of the name but just a little high with the prices but the food is really authentic like going to...
Read moreI went to their location in southington after years of going to their location in newington for about 10 years for special dinner nights(once a week) and puerta vallarta has always been my favorite place to eat. This location in southington was a huge disappointment, my girlfriend wanted to try one of their new locations so we gave this one a try. The prices were insane, not even given a taco section of the menu they were placed in the fajita section, and while we were used to a 11-14(since covid) taco meal this one was 19! Then the margarita prices weren’t marked and it was a 19$ For the original margarita in a deceptively small glass(newingtons was 14 and the glasses seemed much larger) and the chips and salsa were worse than other locations. We’d understand the price difference If the first location(newington) was in a strip mall but the newington location is beautiful and fairly priced and this one is located in the strip mall with prices 50% more than we’ve been paying for the past 10 years. Don’t come here! Me and my girlfriend shared a meal and still spent 60$ on the meal(one 3 taco meal with 1 drink and 1 starter) and wished we had just gone to the place closer to home. Although after this experience I don’t think we’ll be coming back to any of their locations anytime soon. Actually as an edit soon after we’ve seen their response on their drink prices and don’t think they use any more tequila than the 5$ margarita of the on the boarder just down the street. Also yeah our server got our order wrong even when we ordered one meal to share(3tacos we received hard when we explicitly...
