Sadly dissatisfied- I do not eat out from restaurants often, but on a Friday evening I ordered one of my fav comfort meals to go, a Prime rib dip sandwich with Au Jus, which has been a go to on days I feel down. Called in my order as I was walking up almost near the building, the staff on the other end had a hard time hearing me and complained of a poor phone network there. Went in and paid for my order, they were in full dinner rush at the time, so I expected a wait. After waiting 15 minutes the hostess informed me that my ticket got stuck behind a 20 top order, so would be waiting another 15 minutes, which was anticipated. The waiting area and decor of the establishment was impressive. Great ambiance and the patrons seemed happy with their experience. Received my meal checking the bag, everything seemed to be there, container with the sandwich and golden fries, and a box I assumed contained the precious Au Jus. Thanked them and left heading towards my destination about 8 blocks away. Upon opening my dinner package I found that the box indeed contained a variety of sauces, fry sauce, horseradish, ketchup, but contained no Au Jus, the name sake of the dip I ordered. Quickly I called back to inform them of their error, half expecting my meal comped or something. They told me to come on back and they would get me the Au Jus, to which I said I was on my way and started walking across town back to the Steamplant. When I got there informed the staff I was here for the Au Jus, and asked if they could reheat my food which was now leftovers at this point. The staff checked and said they could. As I waited the second time, another staff member came and offer me a beer while I waited. Not having my beer on the menu I opt for their suggestion, a hefeweizen I was unfamiliar with. Expecting a light flavored full body beer with citrus undertones, what I received was a hodgpodge of flavors cardimon, cinnamon, floral essences, which created perfumy poppori flavor that was honestly discusting and should be labelled something other than a Hefe. Anyway, received my food to walk back to my destination, my friends waited over an hour for me. The food looked great, but was cold even though the temp was still in the 80's outside(?). Could have went a lot better, and even the suggestion of comping for their mistake and wasting so much of my time. May try again and hopefully I can erase this experience from memory, because I believe it has the possibility of being so...

If you’re on the hunt for a dining experience that’s equal parts delicious, historic, and family friendly, look no further than the Steam Plant. Nestled inside a century-old powerhouse, this restaurant and landmark is Spokane’s hidden treasure. Not only is it a new family favorite, but it’s also a time machine for the senses—offering great food, cocktails, and a mini-history lesson in one sitting/wandering.
We visited during Thanksgiving and were blown away to find them open (yes, open on Thanksgiving!). They graciously accommodated our family for a late lunch/early dinner, and let me tell you: fresh, hand-tossed pizza tastes even better when served alongside a slice of history. I savored a Smoke Stack Old Fashioned that came a smoked filled bottle, while my wife sipped on a Blackberry Mule that was dangerously smooth.
The real magic? The self-guided adventure mid-meal. Encouraged by the staff, we left our table to explore the architectural marvel that is the Steam Plant. The towering twin smoke stacks are the stars of the show, and they’re not just for looks—fun fact: these stacks used to power the city’s streetcars! We climbed a few steps (yes, extra calorie burn 🙌🏽!) and wandered through the mini-maze of industrial charm, marveling at the steel beams and original boiler plates.
Another quirky tidbit? Back in the day, this plant operated as one of the cleanest steam plants in the U.S. Imagine a world where “clean energy” involved literal smoke stacks.
The hosts and servers were incredibly kind and made our visit feel warm and welcoming, even on a holiday. It’s rare to find a place where history, flavor, and hospitality collide so seamlessly.
Families, couples, and curious adventurers: whether you’re craving mouthwatering food, mixologist cocktails, or just a reason to say “I’ve eaten inside a piece of history,” the Steam Plant is a must. We can’t wait to return for another meal and maybe even more steps (because history and carbs balance each other out, right?).
Hot Tips: *If planning a hotel stay consider the Mont Vale. It’s historic and affordable, and 2 blocks away.
*Also 2 blocks are Whistle Punk (a 21+ lager house) and One Tree Cider that is fam friendly.
*Take a walk thru the Davenport Hotel 2-3 blocks away, it’s really nice. Avoid the coffee shop in...
Read moreIf you are in Spokane for only one meal, there is only one choice, be sure your one stop is at the Steam Plant!!! As soon as you step through the doors you are in awe! This historic building may have been built in the previous century for the production of steam, but this dining experience will blow your apron off! It is a sensory explosion, as you are immersed with culinary goodness, your view from every angle is captivated by this architectural wonder. While the pub is downstairs and the dining is on the main floor, there are two more upper floors that the staff encourages you to explore (preferably following your meal). As you explore the maze of catwalks that overlook the social dining buzz below, you are enthralled with how the tangled web of old iron, steel, brick and glass morphed into such a social space with an exciting modern vibe. Once you are seated, your thirst increases as you explore the drink menu and its many festive choices. If you are into "mules", you are in heaven from the beginning. There is a whole page in which to choose and my choice, by recommendation, was the Huckleberry Mule ... a must try, it was spectacular! Maybe you like a good dark stout ... wowzers, their vanilla caramel stout is some of the best ever! If you want a small appetizer/starter, the Beer Cheese Soup is incredible!! My only mistake ... not ordering a bowl full. The entrees arrived in great timing (not many diners at 5:30 on Sunday, so go early, it gets busier). The fish and chips was a plentiful portion and breaded to a crispy delight. The bbq ribs had good flavor but didn't satisfy me as the dry rub was a bit too dry. With no disgust or fuss my server was back in no time with the best blackened cod fish sandwich I recall tasting! I felt like I was back in New Orleans savoring a spicy catch from the waters. You won't be disappointed with this fish sandwich with a perfectly spicy kick. No room for dessert this time, but I feel like I must make it back to partake of their seriously inviting sweets! The entire experience would not have been the same without the friendliness, guidance and promptness from our server Jordan. Do yourself a favor and ask to be seated in his section. But, do yourself the biggest favor (take it from a traveler, a fellow foodie) and make the Steam...
