Sol Karibe Restaurant&Bar — Restaurant in Springfield

My husband and I are African American. This is our 2nd time visiting this restaurant. When we walked in a gentleman asked us if we would like to order to go or eat in. We said eat in, he said do you know that this is a Spanish restaurant. We said we know. He left to get menus. I turned to my husband and said WOW, that was very racist, are we not supposed to eat Spanish food because we’re not Puerto Rican. I said we should leave but we didn’t, we sat down. About 10 minutes later, the same man walked over to take our order. My husband said this is going to be our last time coming here. I said why, he said I feel uncomfortable. I said well let’s go. I don’t feel comfortable eating here. He walked to the bar and canceled our order and we left. We’re never eating there again and we will make sure our friends and family hear about our experience and don’t support them either. Decent food with reasonable prices, but the ambience is lacking.

Food: As many have said, the portions are HUGE. We ordered the chicken with onions and pork with onions, both with plantains and salad. The meat was sizzling and quite tasty. It was simple, likely with salt & pepper to season, but still good. The plantains were disappointingly bland and the salad was effectively iceberg lettuce. The empanada was flavorful and I would return for that alone.

Service: We arrived on a Fri night and there was only one front of house person. She was both the bartender and the server. Nice and attentive.

Ambience: This place struck me as more of a takeout restaurant than a sit in. The restaurant was virtually empty with bright pale lights. There are TV screens everywhere, so this may be better suited as a late night sports bar than...

I found this restaurant while looking for a different one down the street. This was the best mistake I have ever made. The food is absolutely delicious. The rice with beef stew and Tostones is the best I have ever had( sorry Mom). My wife and I started going there frequently whenever we visited the casino nearby however after about a dozen visits we started going for the food alone. Yes it is that good. I was raised on spanish food and have had many varieties of the servings they offer but the Chef at Sol Karibe is by far the best spanish food I have ever had.
