2.15.2025, Took my wife to UMI for a belated Valentine’s Day sushi dinner. Excellent everything as always. The place was packed and it is so nice to know UMI survived the many restaurant closings since covid. If you like sushi and have not been to UMI you are missing out! Hea and Spring are the best hosts!
12.8.2022, at UMI again last week for my birthday and again yesterday with a friend. Still the "number one" sushi restaurant in the Springfield area because of food quality, sincere, excellent, and dedicated service from the owners Hea and Spring Park and their staff.
7.18.2022, have been to UMI a couple of times since December and it is still the "best"! Took my oldest son there for his birthday on 6.23. The service, the Parks (owners), the atmosphere and especially the food still beats every other sushi place in the Springfield area hands down! If you haven't tried UMI, then you are missing out.
12.4.2021, Was at UMI twice last week and had excellent sushi, service and friendliness from Spring, Hea and staff. UMI is number 1 in my book as always!
7.29.2021, Umi is stil number one in Springfield.Went there today with a dear friend and had an excellent sushi meal, like always. Went to NijiNiji Sushi Bar & Grill last week with a friend and no comparison to Umi, regarding sushi portions, food quality, service and the friendliness of Spring and Hea Park and their family and associates.
5.25.2021, Went to Haruno Sunday, 5.23, for lunch only because UMI does not open until 3:00 on Sunday. Sushi and service were good but the value poor. Portions at Haruno are smaller than at UMI and cost more. The servers are good but not as personable as those at UMI. UMI may not be as big or as fancy as other Asian restaurants in our area, but they sure have a nice place, are very friendly and family oriented and serve excellent food.
11.11.2020, ate Karai Ramen for the first time this evening. It is apparently a knockoff of Haruno. The sushi was ok but nowhere as good as at UMI, nor was the quality, and the sushi portions are about 35% smaller than at UMI. Staff is friendly and courteous, and everywhere looked clean. Unlike UMI, Karai does not give soup or salad with sushi meals. The Park family that owns UMI cannot be beat for making their customers feel welcomed and remembered. As long as UMI is in business it will remain our number one go to for sushi/asian food.
7.24.2020, my wife and I went to UMI tonight, the first time since the corona virus thing started in early February, and wish we had not had to delay so long. Everything - food, staff, drinks, atmosphere - excellent like always! There is no better place to go for asian food in Springfield, especially sushi, and we have tried them all. Spring and Hea Park (the owners) and their family are excellent hosts.
8.21.2019, the review below was made a year ago. Since then we have been back to UMI regularly and will be going again soon. Spring and Hea Park still have the best Asian restaurant and sushi bar anywhere around - excellent food. Just as important, Spring, Hea and their associates are very friendly and accommodating. If you like Asian food, especially sushi, give UMI a try.
2018, Me, my family and friends have been going to UMI for years, and never go or consider anywhere else for great sushi, not to mention that everything else at UMI is also very good. The owners, Spring and Hea (sp?) Park are also very friendly and gracious, as well as their staff. If you like good sushi and haven't tried...
Read moreI thought about not giving this review, but the more I think about it..the more that I am sure that I should. I brought my father here for his 85th birthday because I knew he liked it. My meal was excellent as usual (Sushi) but his was inedible. His was a Beef dish on the regular menu. The beef was like shoe leather and he simply could not chew it. We asked for a different meal and the owner kept sending the very sweet server over to negotiate that we were to pay 50% off of the inedible meal. This was after we tried to order another meal for him and she kept telling the server to come ask us if we just wanted the meat.It was so weird. We said no, and the owner sent the bill with the full price for the meal that was sent back, along with the other 3 meals. I finally told the server to send her to the table immediately. She finally came and asked to see the beef meal. When we told her that the sever took it back to the kitchen, she just said, I will take off the beef dish. She did not say, " I apologize for the mistake", or any other words at all in fact. This was after we watched her argue with the server when she told her that he couldn't eat the meal, and after she openly, angrily discussed us with the other employees including the sushi chef, while she ranted in front of the entire restaurant as she and he stared at us ranting for 20 minutes. It was just unreal. I really liked this place until tonight. I have sent my friends and family there, gave excellent reviews in the past, and had planned to make it my last meal in the states before we moved abroad.
She was beyond unprofessional. We had no problem paying for everything except the meal that was inedible. We did pay for everything including the new meal of chicken that we took with us. It took a long time to even get that meal so it was to go. My dad didnt get to have dinner with us on his birthday. He just sat there and waited. We didnt order the fried ice cream that we usually do, so we just payed and left and went elsewhere for dessert. I am so disappointed. I really used to...
Read moreMe and my friend decided to go to Umi's tonight for an early dinner/late lunch. It's typically an amazing restaurant with wonderful staff and delicious food, so of course, I had no reservations on going here. We got there around 3:50 and were seated very quickly, while the waiter immediately got our drink orders out of the way. We were one of only a handful of tables, maybe about 4 throughout the restaurant. It did take our server a considerable time to come back around to take our food order, but he was dealing with another party's checks, so I thought nothing out of the ordinary. He was a fantastic server and did a magnificent job, no questions asked. The real trouble, however, started when the check arrived. It was about $70 dollars, (The food was very underwhelming compared to the many other times I have been to this establishment, and was not worth the $70 spent.) as I fully expected, and happened to have the exact change in my wallet. He came back very swiftly, before I had the chance to put a tip with the reciept. I thought it was no big deal, figuring I'd lay it on the table on the way out. He asked if we'd be needing anything else, and I asked for a to-go box. (Seeing as I didn't eat my noodles and had only two pieces of steak.) He acknowledged my question with a yes, grabbed the black book and asked if I needed any change. When I told him no, that it was exact change, I got a very condescending and snide "Well I appreciate that." I was very taken aback, but what made matters worse is that we were right next to the servers station and heard him complaining about wanting to have a mandatory 5% gratuity, among other opinions of people who don't tip. He never came back to the table to bring us a to-go box, nor even stopped by the table when I tried to get his attention. I was very shocked at this behavior, seeing as I have never, ever had a problem with the...
