If you're looking for the freshest, local seafood, keep driving. Savannah is less than an hour away and you can have shrimp that was hauled in hours earlier. Of course, nobody in Statesboro wants to make that drive everytime there's a seafood craving!
Enter The Boiling Shrimp. Stuck two minutes south of town is a very good option to hit everyone's fish needs. The building has been around for decades (my earliest recollection was another seafood joint called Captain Joe's) and the highway has slowly crept up so that the vehicles are almost passing under the eves. Inside, though, is a spacious and inviting ocean themed dining room. Behind that sits another room, this one done up in Georgia Southern fandom. Off to the side is a back room that is great for group events.
On my first visit, I made the mistake of asking where they got the raw oysters. After 10 minutes in the back she announced they were from Florida, still not convinced that I was sane for asking. That seems to be an anomaly, though, because the staff has known ever since. In fact on my last visit, Wesley knew not only about the Texas-borne raw oysters, but also the Washington State fried ones!
Drink choices for the grown-ups are limited to wine and bottled beer. The wine covers the grape choices just fine, but don't expect anything above house wine. One excellent touch, though, is that if you return with your take-home The Boiling Shrimp wine glass (plastic, but still...) refills are at a discount! It'd be nice to have that option on beer with a pint glass, but without taps, that gets kind of difficult to arrange.
To truly experience The Boiling Shrimp at it's best, take a friend and get the Whole 9 Yards Dinner For 2. You will be a mess, and have a blast, and it's delicious! If you're eating for one, the bags are still delicious, but if you're really hungry, you will want to there on some extra potatoes or sausage. Any of the sauces are fantastic, if a bit greasy.
Also good is the fried platter, which will ensure that you waddle out instead of walk. There are smaller collections of fried seafood, but I've yet to be able to limit myself to just a couple of choices. The fried seafood isn't too greasy, and the batter has a light flavor that allows the flavors in the seafood to shine through.
The grilled plates are pretty good, but the food seemed to come out a little overcooked. She shrimp was a little chewy and the salmon slightly dry. Not enough that I was sending it back, but it was enough to mention!
Very good seafood at a reasonable price is hard to find anywhere, and The Boiling Shrimp has done an excellent job. It would be nice to see some taps at the bar instead of bottles only. Also, a local shrimp choice would be awesome. As I said before, it's less than an hour to the docks in Savannah, and it can't be too hard to find a provider. It's worth a few bucks more to know you have local white shrimp instead of something frozen since it came out of China. Yes, good seafood is going to cost more than getting the fillet-o-fish at McDonald's, but it's worth splurging once in a while, and The Boiling Shrimp is a good...
Read moreIn fairness I'm probably more critical of this type of food than most as I've spent a good deal of time in New Orleans and the surrounding area.
Very friendly & helpful staff, very surprising interior compared to the outside of the building. The po-boy and gumbo simply weren't, shrimp on an overly buttered hoagie roll doesn't a po-boy make. The "gumbo" was more of a chowder that was surprisingly bland. The gumbo has Nice big shrimp with rice already mixed in and all I can really taste for sure is a amount of heat that would be perfect for the dish if it had flavor to enhance. I think it's the amount of celery overpowering the other flavors. Sweet potato fries and tea were very good, no after taste as many places tend to from not changing the oil frequent enough. The "po-boy" was on a heavily buttered (to the point it was coming out the other side) and lightly toasted hoagie roll with lettuce tomato and their po-boy sauce. The waitress let me know they were out of lettuce. I don't know anybody that eats a po-boy for the lettuce and in complete honesty if the lettuce makes or breaks it there's a much bigger problem. The little tomatoes that were there were fresh and the fried shrimp were very good. Their prices are a bit high and the menu is set up for seniors with font you can read from across the room.
Over all it wouldn't be my first choice but I would eat here again mostly based on friendliness and cleanliness of the...
Read moreI only have a few things to add to the list of already glowing reviews. I am from NJ and am on a road trip moving my RV from the north to the south for the winter. I decided to take the “road less travelled” on my way south. Leaving Pigeon Forge, TN I took a semi-direct route south towards my next stop in Orlando. Wouldn’t you know after a day of driving I called it a night in Statesboro and stayed at the Parkwood RV Park. And what was right next door? Yep, Boiling Shrimp. I woke up late and decided to take a walk to the corner, stopped by Boiling Shrimp to see their menu. It was a rainy Monday and the place was empty save for 3 wait staff. I continued on to the store, bought some stuff and on the way back, stopped in for an early lunch. One of my best decisions on my road trip. Now I know why I wound up in Statesboro!
I was waited on by Gabby, a sweet recent HS grad saving to go to college.. I asked for her recommendation as I was just passing through and probably wouldn’t return and wanted something special. The low country boil it would be. Snow crab w potato, corn, sausage in a medium hot Cajun gravy. STUPENDOUS is all I can say. I cooked my way through college and am an amateur BBQer. All I can say is the spices were spectacular; every part of the meal was great. Nothing left other than but a mess of shells!
Will I be back? Don’t know, but one trip, one great meal, and great service, what...
