Great for omnivores, but not vegans. This restaurant should not show up in a search for vegan restaurants, since there are limited vegan options. It’s not vegan-friendly. All their soups and bread have animal products.
The House Black Bean Burger itself is vegan, but the way it is served is not. If you’re vegan, avoid the bun, cheese, sautéed onions, and fries. Substitute a salad instead of the fries, since they are cooked in the same oil that handles animal products. It would be nice if the chef offered to sauté your onions in oil, instead of butter, but that would be too much work it seems. It would also be nice if they had vegan bread options. I asked for pita, but they said they didn’t have any. The salad included leafy greens and tomatoes, which were tasty. As was the black bean burger, served plain. (See photo)
The sweet potato hummus appetizer is vegan, and tastes great with the warm tortilla chips. But it’s not enough to be a meal. Paired with the scaled down black bean burger, my meal did not satiate me. My carnivore friend said his brisket was “okay” but not something he’d order again. He also complained that the portion was too big! (Go figure. I had too little food, and he had too much.) He got a huge bowl, not the sandwich, and left much behind. He had no desire to wrap it to go for later eating.
The people here are friendly, but the service is not so swift. Twice I had visited (first time was about 3 years ago), and both times they forgot to give us our utensils after serving us food. This last time, after not being able to get someone’s attention, I found cloth-wrapped utensils in the other room and helped myself to them. Later, the friendly server came by and asked about our meal, and if we needed anything else.
If you’re vegan, only go to the Sweet Potato Café to be sociable with omnivores. Eat a snack beforehand so you don’t leave hungry. With Sweet Potato in their name, you’d think this restaurant would be more vegan-friendly. Unfortunately, they are not. It’s more of a southern “meat and potatoes” kind...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I were travelling in the Stone Mountain area for a long weekend and decided to do some exploring and Geocaching in the downtown area of Stone Mountain Village. It was around lunchtime on Monday that we happened upon the cafe and decided to head in for lunch. We were greeted promptly by a friendly gentleman who offered the two of us a table in the room to the left. The waitress was prompt and very friendly when greeting us. We ordered sweet iced tea and fried green tomatoes, the waitress explained that the fried green tomatoes are one of the house specialties. She wasn't kidding! The fried green tomatoes were thin and crispy and had a vinegary sweet sauce with black eyed peas and corn and other small minced vegetables as sort of a relish over top of them and they were absolutely incredible! I had a turkey panini with the sweet potato salad. The sweet potato salad as explained to us is like normal potato salad but with sweet potatoes and place of the regular white potatoes, it was tasty and refreshing on a hot day and the Panini was just fine. My boyfriend had a brisket sandwich and he reported that it was exceptionally tasty and the sweet potato french fries that came with it were awesome. While we were having lunch a number of other people came in to the room we were saddened and other spots in the restaurant and the conversations overheard made it sound like they were frequent customers, the waitress knew their order before she even came up to their table. This is a Hidden Gem on a side street in a sleepy tourist area that if I were nearby on a regular basis I would absolutely be going to. The shabby chic sort of Decor in the cute little Craftsman style home converted into a restaurant is very welcoming, looks like it would be a great place for a dinner date, the staff is extraordinarily attentive and friendly but not obtrusive, the...
Read moreReviews said it would be a great lil place for breakfast. Love trying new places. Walked in lady was nice asked how many, told her 2, here’s a table sit here. Another staff member came up and said we don’t normally sit 2 people at a four top you can move over to this table. Table was small and was fit for a single person. As I looked around the restaurant there were 3 other tables where there were only 2 people at a four top. I requested to stay where we were originally seated by another staff member. It seems that is when it all went downhill. It took an hour to get our breakfast. I watched other tables that arrived after us receive their food, we had to ask for refills of drinks, there was no stopping at the table, it was literally asking as they passed by. Our original server who set us, didn’t see her again until our check came. We both ordered toast, only one of us received it. And it didn’t come with the breakfast. We were halfway through with our meal when it arrived! No condiments, food was dropped off had to ask for everything. Saw another table that was waiting for their food toast was taken to their table long before their food arrived. This is definitely a “local” spot, watching the staff you could tell the tourist from the locals. The tourist received less service. Food was tasty the service was horrible. There were delicious looking desserts on the counter but after the service we received I didn’t want to spend anymore money where I didn’t feel appreciated as a customer. Especially a customer for the first time. I can assure when visiting the area again I will spend my money and time elsewhere where customer service is given and tourists are...
