The food was fine. The service? A tragic comedy in three acts.
Act 1: We order chicken tempura. My daughter’s excited. The waitress — young, possibly working her very first shift in the history of food service — nods enthusiastically… and returns with chicken nuggets and fries. Bold choice. I also ordered miso soup, which apparently went on an extended vacation because it didn’t appear until I’d finished my roll and had to ask for it.
Act 2: Dessert time. Mochi ice cream — three pieces, three flavors. She tells me it’s only two pieces. Then, mid-order, discovers it’s three. Great! I’ll take vanilla, strawberry, and green tea. You can probably guess what arrived… just vanilla and strawberry. Apparently green tea didn’t make the cut.
Act 3: Acceptance. By now, my kids — who usually don’t notice service unless the waiter sets the table on fire — are looking at me like, ‘Mom, what is happening?’ I spend the rest of the meal doing damage control instead of enjoying it.
Final review: The sushi was fine, but the service was so bad it should come with a warning label. There’s a great spot off 1960 that knows how to get an order right — and that’s where I’ll be spending my sushi money...
Read moreAnother mediocre Japanese restaurant in Tomball. The staff was friendly though!
The crab puffs itself were good, but the sauce that came with it was a bit strange - it wasn't the traditional sweet and sour sauce that come with crab puffs. It was a clear sauce with a green tint to it and had a interesting taste to it; not very sweet either. I can't put my finger on the flavor of it, but it was not desirable.
The spicy tonkotsu ramen wasn't impressive, despite reading other reviews raving it. The bone broth was lacking in depth and tasted watered down. The noodles were not fresh and seemed like they were dehydrated noodles that were boiled back. The chashu was cooked nicely, but lacked in spices. It was nice to have two tea eggs that were cooked perfectly. But overall it tasted like the ramen was made from a high end instant noodle package.
The shaggy dog wasn't bad, nor was it good, it was just okay. For $14, it was a little overpriced for the amount of maki you were getting.
Overall the food here is what I consider "out of necessity" food. You eat it just to eat, but there's nothing too...
Read moreWe got a boat load of sushi (literally) at the newly opened Yokohamaya Tomball. We started with Gyoza and Spicy Garlic Edamame; my son loves both. The three of us split the Boat Deluxe - Raw-14 pieces of sushi (chef choice), 9 pieces of sashimi (chef choice), spicy salmon roll, shaggy dog roll and sakura roll. Everything was so fresh and delicious, we sank that boat like the titanic! Lol we are so full we are going to sink to the bottom of the ocean with very full bellies of goodness.
We also got a Baked Avocado appetizer (stuffed with snow crab, shrimp and topped with eel sauce and spice mayo). I had a Sopparo Premium and a Asahi Super Dry beer. My wife got a couple glasses of Sauvignon Blanc.
We had a bunch of friends of with us and between all of us tried a wide array of the menu. Just look at all the delicious pictures and then head there, because this place is the real deal and the sushi chef is amazing. Our server Michael was really great, knowledgeable and personable. The menu has more than sushi, they also have Hibachi, Yaki Soba, Udon, Ramen, Soups, Salads and...
