NM Cafe — Restaurant in Town of Hempstead

This was my 5 th visit to your cafe and I brought a friend who was a first timer. Although the food was good , the service was subpar. Although busy , as it was lunch time , the restaurant was not filled to capacity. The bus boy came over 2 x to remove our soup and bread which we obviously had not finished. The waiter , Mike , ? Took our order and that was the last we saw him. When we finished our entree the busboy removed our plates. Within 5 minutes a hostess slaps the bill on the table , nothing said. I flagged the waiter down and told him we weren’t done and wanted coffee / tea and weren’t sure why we got the bill. No words said other than he took our order and removed the ck. Had our tea and coffee and the bill once again was delivered by the hostess , no words said. We paid our bill. On the way out I asked for the manager. Was told there wasn’t a manager by the 2 hostesses who said they were in charge. When I described our poor service her reply was I’m sorry but we are very busy. No they weren’t. I’ve been there with a line out the door. There was no line and there were empty tables. I indicated I was very unhappy and wouldn’t be back. My mom is old school. She grew up in an era when all best dept stores had cafes. She used to love going to Lord and Taylor’s Café but it’s closed now. I saw that Neiman Marcus had a café and they had finger sandwiches, so I decided to take her there for Mother’s Day. When we arrived the hostess was very nice. A beautifully dressed woman who looked like the manager showed us to our table. She was very accommodating and quick thinking as my mother has a shopping cart she also uses as a walker. The manager seated us at a table and removed a chair so we could tuck the cart underneath where it wouldn’t get in anyone’s way. Upon sitting down, we were served popovers with strawberry butter and chicken broth. It was a delightful treat. We ordered the finger sandwiches, the Mandarin orange souffle with chicken salad, and truffle fries. Everything was delicious and the presentation wonderful. Our server Anthony was great too. The Neiman Marcus cafe is a special place for my family and I. How can I not give it 5 stars?? Whether it be lunch during a day at the mall or to celebrate a birthday, Mother’s Day or a graduation we are always treated like family. The manager Sheila greets us with conversion and a smile. The servers are great and Anthony aka Tony is like family to us. My mom is always treated like royalty there. The food selection is great and tasty! We love the popovers with the strawberry butter and the amazing, truly amazing broth. The service it’s great but the food and the people themselves is what makes us continually return.
