My wife and I have been eating Sushi for close to 30 years and Kurofune is by far our favorite. We have tried many places throughout the years and some have come and gone but the good ones always remain. This is Absolutely a good one on a consistent basis.
For me, the biggest issues are the freshness of the fish, and the fish to rice ratio. While many places make sushi taste good, they have to much rice per amount of fish they put into their rolls. If I'm going out for Sushi, I want mostly fish and not to be filled up with the rice. I can get rice anywhere.
The fish is ALWAYS fresh and the Chefs are very skilled in their art, creating some of the best rolls out there. I always order from the "Special Rolls" section of the menu because I love the combination and variety of flavors that are in the these rolls. I try to include a new roll when we go so I can sample the variety of choices.
The owner and staff are so pleasant, accommodating, kind and a pleasure to deal with. I NEVER feel rushed to leave and the atmosphere is peaceful and calming.
Kurofune is truly a place that you can come with Family and Friends to enjoy a delicious meal.
I give it 6 stars because 5 just isn't enough! 😊🍶
Btw.... I've got a belly full of Sushi as I write this review, lol (and this is the first and only review that I've ever done).😁 ...
Read moreThis is a small traditionally decorated restaurant. Between the atmosphere and the photos online you are given the impression it's going to be a premium dining experience on par with some of the better local no nonsense Japanese spots especially given the prices. It is not. The simplest and hallmark of any Japanese place , the California rolls, had overcooked mushy rice that was pressed so tightly it was dense and chewy. A harbinger of what was to follow. Gyoza was over cooked being nearly blackened on one side and falling apart on the other , the filling dry and tasting off. An order of fried rice had tiny overcooked shrunken shrimp with consistency frozen precooked shrimp. The only flavor being that of butter. The portion was very small . A small mediocre Ribeye steak followed . Flavorless and chewy reminded one of a cut from your local supermarket. For $35.00 a small steak should be a cut above the rest really. Japanese food is never inexpensive , that's a given . To look down at half finished food and still be craving Japanese food is so unsatisfying and you feel as if taken for a ride . The fact that it was all so very Blah lends me to believe that the high ratings here on Google are either based on a time when the place was much better or plainly put, misstatements for...
Read moreI had dinner at Kurofune for the first time in May, and I can't wait to go back again! The atmosphere was perfect, with comfortable seating and plenty of space between tables. Our server was wonderful and accommodating, as was the hostess who came over 2-3 times to see how we were doing. Every single thing we ordered was incredibly tasty and plated beautifully!
We were able to order a couple of things not on their printed menu—the Sushi Trio and Spicy Butter Ika—and really enjoyed the house hot sake with our meal. The Toro Tartare app came out with our Salmon & Yellowtail Ceviche first, and both dishes were truly exceptional. The Salmon Skin Salad was at least 3 times as big as I expected it to be and the skin was prepared perfectly—not greasy at all. The Oyster Yaki was decadent, and we enjoyed a number of rolls (Halloween Roll, Bulgogi Roll, & Fireman Roll) and sashimi, all of which I would order again! At the end of our meal, the server returned with a round of plum wine on the house—such a sweet and yummy surprise!
I can't recommend Kurofune enough. It's really a gem on Long Island that is so unassuming...I wish I had gone sooner! The prices are really great for the quality of the food and service, and I look forward to having many more meals there...
