I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DINNING AT RANI MAHAL.
I want to begin by stating that my partner (who is White) and I (of South Asian origin) have both worked in the hospitality industry, and we are incredibly empathetic to the challenges of a hectic dinning room, lack of floor staff, and that as a result, we are also aware that it can take extra time (maybe even double) to have things run efficiently during the pandemic era. We had been in Paris only a couple days (having really an incredible time with the people and the sites) when we walked by Rani Mahal and decided to have lunch. There was only two waiters (both mid-late 40s - South Asian men) on the floor and shortly after being seated the space was filled with other guests (all White customers). Looking around one would assume - a packed dinning room is a good sign! - unfortunately that was not the case - which we later learned from other reviewers to be an ongoing issue.
When the waiter first stopped by the table, we asked for menus (standard) and I positively commented on the interior and asked how long the restaurant had been around (also, a pretty standard question) and the waiter aggressively responded ‘WHY DON’T YOU LOOK UP THE REVIEWS ON GOOGLE HUH!!’ The bizarre and intense tone was so shocking that I wondered if he was trying to make a joke and that clearly something must be lost in translation (although his English seemed to be just fine). What unfolded for the next hour was maybe one of the most discriminatory experiences I have ever had in a South Asian restaurant.
With each subsequent visit (taking our order, dropping off our order, refusing to get us a drink menu, refusing to bring us a cheque, ignoring us at the register when we walked up to pay), the waiter grew more and more hostile, until he was actually y-e-l-l-i-n-g at my partner ‘I DON’T UNDERSTAND YOU HUH WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM HUH I DON’T SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE HUH WHAT YOU SAY’ which let me be perfectly clear was the response to the simple question ‘Could we order some drinks?’ Other weirdly honest (and even telling?) statements that this waiter blurted out included ‘I AM THE RACIST! I AM! THE RACIST! HUH YOU UNDERSTAND??! I AM RACIST’ which (naturally?) was the response when we asked if rice was included in our lunch order.
I watched this waiter move effortlessly between tables - of all White customers - speaking clearly in English and French. Lucky for me, this is not the first time I have experienced intense misogyny with a twist of racial discrimination. This waiter needs therapy and A LOT of education in relation to idk diasporic existences, marginalized feminisms, representation in relation to property, whiteness, and honestly even some basic understanding of how to not be a total bag of trash to customers in the dinning room. His aggression was clearly directed at the fact that we are an interracial couple.
Decor? It is plain not much to look at.
Food? Butter Chicken was mediocre (very thin gravy and tiny portions, gravy was oddly sweet), Palak Paneer was clumpy and the Paneer tasted stale, the rice was overcooked and the nan was o.k! If you’re in the mood to completely destroy your day/holiday by a waiter go to this ‘fine dinning’ establishment.

Read moreTo celebrate my mom's 60th birthday, I decided to take her to this restaurant that had come highly recommended. We wanted to make the evening special, so we explored the menu thoroughly and ordered a variety of dishes.
We started with two delicious appetizers: a mixed vegetable platter and a mixed meat platter. Both were perfectly seasoned and offered a delightful assortment of flavors that set the tone for the rest of the meal. For the main course, we indulged in a rich and aromatic lamb biryani, a luxurious gold curry, the ever-popular chicken tikka masala, and a sizzling tandoori chicken. We also ordered two more dishes to round out our feast, though the exact names escape me—they were equally impressive.
Our server, Abdul, was exceptionally polite and hospitable. He took the time to ensure that my entire family was comfortable, and his attentive service truly enhanced our dining experience. Thanks to Abdul’s warm hospitality and the outstanding food, our evening was a memorable one. I would definitely return to this...
Read moreI’m writing a review for the owner’s wife who works there part time. She was extremely rude calling me back saying that i gave her my home address but when the driver called i asked the driver to drop it off at the hospital. This is far from the truth!
I placed an $80 order and gave her the address. I gave her the specific street address which is Mamaroneck Ave and the city is White Plains. She printed on the receipt Mamaroneck as the city so the driver was driving all around but i gave her the correct address when she called and problem was resolved. What gave her the right to call me and scold me without admitting to her fault.
Maybe next time you should ask before accusing a customer! You were so rude and disrespectful. You talked to me like you were talking to your toddler! Lady any uneducated person can own a restaurant so don’t challenge my intelligence with your lack of. Professionalism is required even to own a family business! Go back and take some courses on professionalism and...
