Water's Edge Sweet Tooth — Restaurant in Traverse City

I would highly recommend Water's Edge Sweet Cakes for your wedding cake needs! We were married last October and we had a four tier wedding cake. Even before meeting her, Kim was very responsive to emails. We were able to choose different flavors for each layer...and basically any flavor combination we could come up with! We opted for Champagne and Strawberries (vanilla cake with fresh strawberries and a champagne buttercream), Chocolate cake with cherry pie filling, and a vanilla cake with apple pie filling and salted caramel buttercream. They were all so delicious. After our tasting, we were able to make adjustments (we thought the salted caramel buttercream was a little on the sweet side) to the final product. Kim delivered our cake to the Starry Night Barn and even placed my florals on the cake for us. Even my wedding planner was impressed as she has had to decorate cakes with florals in the past. The guests loved the cake so much that we barely had any leftovers! Several guests had two slices of cake! They probably would have had three slices if they noticed there were three different flavors! Kim was also able to accomodate a late request for a birthday cake (chocolate with raspberry filling....DROOOOOOL) to serve at our rehearsal dinner as a bridesmaid's and our officiant's birthdays were the same week/day of our wedding. I did make my own cookies for our cookie table/wedding favors, but it was nice to know that if it came down to crunch time, Kim did offer her services to make additional treats as well. I called and ordered our daughter’s birthday cake a month ahead of time. Had a picture as a an example. How I wanted the Dino’s to look and that I wanted one to be a triceratops. She said that was doable. I also said I wanted her to do differently on the side of the cake and she could have creative freedom. Also told her no yellow only purple and pink with green for the plants and spelled out the names. Then we talked about cake fillings and decided on carrot I asked what she put in it and she said I could pick what I wanted. I picked golden raisins, carrot, and pecans. The cake was dense and heavy with regular raisins and seemed like candied walnuts because they were so hard. Then it gets worse with the outside of the cake. The first time I came to pick it up half the cake was yellow and there was no icing work on the side of the cake, and two long necks. She admitted she didn’t look up the dinosaurs and just copied the picture I sent her. Which made me even more mad. She told me she could fix it but I couldn’t pick it up until tomorrow. Which was pointless because the day of pick up was our daughters birthday and we check out the next morning with a 6 hour drive home. She said she could fix the yellow. Which she did but she spelled my daughters name wrong and still not icing work on the side and the top looked nothing like I wanted it to. Honestly if the cake was for myself I would of just asked for a full refund. I was extremely disappointed and the worst experience ordering a cake. Firstly, I just want to say that ordering the cake was easy. I called and the woman I spoke to was very nice. Customer service was great.

We came from Wisconsin and took extra time to find the right bakery to make our special wedding anniversary cake. We ordered a mocha cake with custard filling. The cake itself was moist which was great — most chocolate cakes tend to be dry but this one was not. There was nothing special about the custard — it was a thin layer and didn’t add much to the cake. As for the frosting, it was far too sweet and really took away from the cake flavor.

Overall we were happy with the flavor we got but the decoration itself was so disappointing. I have been decorating cakes and own my own cake business since 2019 and I would never send out a cake looking the way ours did. I gave creative freedom to the decorator when I ordered over the phone. All that was put on the top was poorly made flowers. The edges were horrendous. Improvements definitely need to be made and more practicing needs to be done. We were so disappointed with the cake we got after waiting weeks after ordering to see how it would turn out.
