If you’re looking for a nice, fancy romantic dinner, skip this place.
We went to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Last time we were there was several years ago for a big birthday. I was very impressed then, not so much now. When you go somewhere that charges $50 for an ala carte CHICKEN entree, you know you’re going in part for the experience. But the ambiance is more business conference/cigar bar than romantic dinner. It’s dark and gray quiet except for the sound of other people eating and whatever sounds staff make. No background music. And they did not enforce the dress code at all. We were there at 6:30, so early for NYE, but right after we got there, they seated a couple wearing ripped jeans and the man was wearing a Sherpa flannel coat and baseball hat. They reeked of cigarette and marijuana smoke. It was so strong I contemplated asking for a new table because the place was literally 3/4 empty. No idea why they say them right next to us. Worse, to the other side of them was a family of 5 with 3 kids under 10, also in the same dining area. At least the family was all dressed up and the children were well behaved. I’m sure the parents springing $175 for the tomahawk steak really appreciated the side of extra smoke aroma with their kids.
We ordered the 40oz porterhouse for 2 and it was cooked as requested. It was good, as expected, although I am not sure it was $115 good. A good bit of it was bone. The strip side looked decent (1.5”-1.75” thick), the filet side looked like 6-8 oz. It was sliced into .5” pieces: 4 for the filet, 5 for the strip. We ordered garlic mashed potatoes as a side that was supposed to be a “generous” portion but it looked like 1.5 c, so basically an ice cream scoop of potatoes per person for $13.
We are both very good cooks so we don’t eat out except for special occasions. This was supposed to be and wasn’t really. I thought maybe the feeling would elevate as the night went on, but by the time we were done, the people who were seated looked like they were either coming from or heading to the casino—sleeveless sequin skirts up to there, tattoos up the neck, sneakers and sweatshirts. It felt like being at an Outback with a few burnt-out lightbulbs except the servers here wear button down shirts. The most upscale part of the experience was the server (who was pleasant and attentive) came and cleaned up our crumbs, and they offered us “signature” knives because of the cut we ordered (which just made me wonder why everyone doesn’t get a nice steak knife at a nice steak house?). We were out in an hour and there wasn’t anything about the experience that made me want to linger longer than that. Honestly, we chose this restaurant because we had a gift card and I would not go out of my way to go back. If we get another gift card we’ll probably regift it. There are plenty of equally or less pricey restaurants in the Royal Oak, Grosse Pointe and downtown areas that offer a truly unique dining experience while actually...
Read moreIf I could give zero stars I would. This restaurant claims they are “fine dining” and enforce a dress code, which realistically not everyone can follow accurately and of course they cannot stream every single customer that enters wearing jeans, flannels or graphic shirts. I understand that. And from the looks of eating inside there is a lot of casual wear that they allow despite their dress code. Me and my boyfriend had a reservation for 6:15pm under my dad Roy T. on 12/28/24 to meet the rest of my family.
Mind you I am wearing all black, nice quality clothes that are suitable for a night out at a nice restaurant. I wore a leather jacket, black blouse that had lace detailing, black mid length skirt, and black leather ankle boots. Also it is 50ish degrees outside in December which is very rare for Michigan. Immediately upon entering, the hostesses at the front desk to check in do not even welcome us, smile or ask if we had a reservation. So of course I go ahead and tell them I was meeting a party under Roy. There were exactly 3 white older employees, 2 females and 1 male.
Tell me why the older male hostess (tall with white hair) immediately remarks in a rude and demeaning tone “You have to cover up.” I am immediately shocked and I look at my boyfriend like I cannot believe this is happening. My outfit was entirely appropriate as mentioned previously. It was so embarrassing and entirely unprofessional because he just dismissed us and forced us to leave or come back with something different to wear. Mind you my family is already waiting inside for us so we can start eating.
I have never felt so belittled at an establishment before, and for that older male hostess to try to sexualize my outfit by telling me to cover up was so disrespectful and demeaning to hear as a young woman. I’m not stupid, I know that this is a “fine dining” establishment and it is supposed to be a family friendly atmosphere. I would never as a self aware customer show up in attire that is offensive or inappropriate.
Eventually me and my boyfriend drove 20 min back to my house to change and drive the 20 min back to the restaurant. I didn’t get the name of the older male hostess who mistreated me, but I wish I did and I hope management reaches out to me to let me know who that man was and to apologize. It seems like this older male hostess was on a power trip, and didn’t have anything better to do than target younger people.
Safe to say I am never eating here again, and will warn everyone around to stay far away from this place. It’s a shame since the steak is pretty good and the waiters/waitresses...
