I had a nightmarish evening las night at this restaurant. First let me say, that the food is excellent. The service wasn't bad either. But the management? Awful! This restaurant is owned by the same company that owns Ninja Sushi and Tomo of Plymouth. They chose to go with Groupon and that was a mistake on their part. I went in to the restaurant with an expired groupon with a paid value of 15.00. I followed the terms on the groupon and got a dinner food item for 15.00. At this point, the manager came to my table and told me I had to spend 30.00 to use it. I told her she was incorrect, and that she couldn't force me to buy any more than the dollars on the certificate, since that would be a bait and switch, and was illegal. No where on any terms and conditions they had set was this mentioned. So while I was eating, she called groupon customer service and shoved the phone in my face, to talk to a customer service rep. I confirmed with groupon that I did not have to spend one penny more than was on the certificate, and that she had to honor it. ( I did that today since the rep last night was confused about what I was saying.) I repeated to her that I would not buy anything more and that the only payment for the entree she would get was what was on the groupon, and I left. They had also given me black beans with soy sauce on them, to which I am allergic, and I had notified the waiter that I couldn't eat soy sauce.
When I am eating with an unexpired groupon, I consistently spend more than the value of the certificate, and tip the waiter 20% on the full value. I will never go to any of their restaurants again. I've had too many problems with customer service at their restaurants. I had my daughter's graduation party at Tomo Plymouth, and since it was also her birthday, the waiter brought her some ice cream. The manager then told him that he would have to pay for it, as it was not their policy to give away birthday ice cream. The total on the bill was over 300.00, and she was arguing over ice cream? The waiter said that she gave it to Korean customers, but was not giving it to us because we were white. We made sure to pay him the extra amount in his tip. But seriously, this is how they treat a large party? That manager moved on to one of their other restaurants, and we haven't had problems in Plymouth since. But these people clearly have no idea how to...
Read moreFriend’s ramen was nothing like the photos on the menu nor what typical ramen traditionally looks like. Hard boiled egg yolk was fully cooked & 2 paper thin pieces of pork like a cold cut. When requesting to return it and take it off the bill shortly after receiving it. One of the waiters had a harsh blunt tone asking “what’s wrong with it?” While this question might typically seem fair and i personally would not normally overthink on someone’s presentation, it was one of the situations where you couldn’t miss his rude demeanor. Also, it does not seem appropriate to put a customer on spotlight and pressure them to say why they don’t want it and/or displeased with it. If the customer originally ordered it by choice (typically the case), then it probably speaks for itself that the same customer requesting to return it has a good reason to step outside their comfort zone to assert themselves. Also, 3 different sushi rolls from 3 separate customers (billed separately) were all added to the same plate despite mentioning that our party had a specific food allergy. When originally asking before ordering if the crab was authentic vs imitation and specifically stating to the main waiter of our party having a crab allergy, the waiter said “probably” in their answer before us clarifying we needed a concrete answer. Most of their menu involves crab products in them and items detailing variations of “California roll” in the item description, it was hard to determine if California called for necessary ingredients. When asking for regular utensils for some of our party, the waiter pointed to the cup of chopsticks and straws on the table and walked away. Crowd was EXTREMELY loud with one woman yelling. It put a lot of people on edge and very startling. Took forever to get a waiter to take our drink and food orders. Prices were outrageous especially for the quality. Lacked basic soft beverages. Also karaoke is a significant pricey cost per hour. Also same staff kept asking us the same questions (not your typical “how’s everything” questions) which became irritating. Also waitress kept touching, grabbing, and rubbing two of our party’s arms despite clearly asking and demanding to stop touching them. You know it’s bad when a sweet couple insisted to give a piece of shrimp tempura to one of us at our party who returned their food as...
Read moreHonestly don’t know where to start. I originally went to Tomo due to friends recommending this place as having authentic and fantastic Japanese food.
This couldn’t have been further from the case having gone here tonight (12/1/2018).
I had the Miso ramen from their dinner menu. I genuinely have not had any broth in my life that was as flavorless as Tomo’s miso ramen. Miso ramen isn’t supposed to be a bland ramen. It should be bursting with flavor. It is something that I’ve had at many Ramen shops across the USA, and one of my favorites when I travel yearly to Tokyo, Japan. It basically came out as lukewarm, tasteless water. Absolutely zero seasoning in the soup base. Bland beyond belief. And the toppings that they put on it were pretty much just as flavorless (chashu, bean sprouts, bok choy, bamboo shoots). And whatever ramen noodles they use for their noodles ended up being a compacted mess inside the soup, which should’ve been easy to eat, but instead clung as one mass every time I would try and eat it.
To cap off the dinner, the service was also unbelievably lacking. I understand that at some point you might want to favor the tables that have a ton of people versus the one guy coming into your restaurant. But I shouldn’t be getting my food 10mins after tables that were sat 10+ minutes AFTER I had already ordered. Heck, it took almost 45 minutes after ordering to even get my good to begin with. That is ridiculous when all I ordered as a Tuna Lover’s roll (the only really decently edible thing I had tonight) and Miso Ramen. When people are getting more complex dishes served before me and they had been sat and ordered well after I had, something is wrong.
This is genuinely the first time I’ve ever had to write a bad review in a restaurant, but this one really took the cake and turned what should’ve been an enjoyable evening with a good meal, into one where I paid way too much for an extraordinarily lackluster meal...
