Update: May 26 2024:
I am changing my review. I’m honestly devastated about what happened with my son’s birthday cake. I go to pick up the cake that I ordered one month in advance. I gave them a reference photo and I told them exactly how I wanted the cake. I get there at the pick up time and the cake isn’t even done. I wait around for it and they put this half sheet cake in the largest box imaginable and tell me that the cake is very fresh and has not been chilled. I was advised to keep it flat and immediately put it in the fridge. Well I put it flat in my car and drive the 3 minutes it takes to get home. I carry the box inside and empty my fridge out. The box doesn’t fit in the fridge. I go to open the box to see if it’s possible to take the tray out and put it in the fridge and I see that the cake has slid off the layer before I even touch it and it’s ruined. I calmly call the place and speak to the owner. I told him that the cake slid and that it wasn’t chilled before given to me. He tells me to send him a picture of the cake and that he will call me back. He never calls. I drive over to the bakery and go inside. I call the owner and he answers. I ask him about the cake situation and he says “it’s not my problem I checked the camera and the cake was fine before you left. What you did with it after is not our problem.” I get upset and emotional and did raise my voice which I shouldn’t have done. However, in my defense being told to pound sand on a $180 when I have a large party for my son in an hour and a half would make anyone upset. I tell him I want them to fix it or I want a full refund. He hangs up the phone in my face and won’t take my calls at all anymore. An employee comes out says theirs nothing they can do and that they told me the cake was fresh. I get that it was fresh but if they told me the cake wasn’t done and needed to be chilled I would have come back in an hour and picked it up. She asks if I spoke to the owner and I tell her that he hung up the phone in my face. She talks to the pastry chef and the chef tells me that she can try to fix it but it’s not going to look good. Im relieved and I sit down to wait for the cake on a chair in the corner and sit on my phone. The employee comes out and asks me to leave. I left and drove to Farhat across the street who the owner was so sympathetic and helpful I asked if he had a half sheet cake ANY kind that I could buy for my sons party and he spoke to their chef and they MADE ME A HALF SHEET CAKE IN AN HOUR for 60 dollars cheaper than Mid East. Mid east pastry will no longer receive my business or my families business and I’m really sad to say that. I don’t think they actually care if we don’t come back but I just wanted to share my story so people are aware of the type of owner runs this business.
Old post: My family has been a repeat customer to this bakery since they moved to this country 30+ years ago. They did an amazing job on my son’s birthday cake. The guests were talking about this cake for 2 weeks after the party! It was a vanilla strawberry custard cake and the design...
Read moreWhen Grand MidEast Pastry was just MidEast Pastry, I have it say, it was much better. I was excited to get some sweets and a cake for my daughter’s birthday from here. The new location is much bigger and newer, offering much more than the old store. But the quality of the sweets/cakes has gone down. We tried the crème brûlée, rice pudding, 2 slices of cheesecake, and cannolis. We also got a pistachio custard cake. The cake itself wasn’t fresh. It was hard, and so was the frosting. It was definitely sitting in the case for a few days. The crème brûlée was good, as was the rice pudding and cheesecake, according to our guests. The cannolis were soggy and not fresh or crispy at all. For those few items, my total was $87! I don’t know what I bought, nor do they give an itemized receipt or explanation to my charges. I feel they make up prices as they go. Definitely off-putting.
For our last visit, one of the girls working recommended this new chocolate cake with a gold design. It was decorated beautifully and she was insistent we’d enjoy the flavors. When we tried the cake, it tasted like they used an entire bottle of rose water in the cake. The rose flavor was so strong that it overpowered every other supposed flavors we would taste. There wasn’t even a chocolate flavor at all, despite the cake and frosting being chocolate! The cake was inedible. We threw it out and made a note to stick to our favorite cake there because they never mess that up. This is why they say never say never… This was our go-to dessert place. With this disappointment in our recent visits, we can’t justify spending so much money and not getting much value in...
Read moreMy fam and I have been going to this shop since we first discovered it (over a decade).
The day before Eid (now two days ago), I came by to purchase a small custard cake as we usually like to for this holiday. They didn't have any when I came in and when I asked if I could order one for the next day, they said they aren't going to make small custard cakes and only the big ones. So then I just purchased the large one for $55.
When I went home with the cake, I put it in the fridge immediately to use the next day. When we pulled it out of the fridge the next evening, one strawberry had molded terribly and the other berries had molded a little bit. The cake was also starting to fall in the middle (concave). We took off the strawberries and anything we felt would have molded (took off the whip and didn't eat the outside pistachio whip to prevent mold spores from being consumed.) since it was late in to the evening, the store was closed and could not get anyone on the phone to report it when I was finally available after the holiday event (around 11pm)
The next day after work I went to return it. They only gave a partial refund and nothing to compensate for the event dessert being ruined, my time, gas, or inconvenience of it all. I understand that making a cake requires resources that are expensive, but cakes should not become moldy within 24-36hrs of purchase when fruit is cleaned properly (vinegar/water soln). I expected a full refund at the very least and was disappointed that didn't happen.
We usually love their cakes but from now on my family and I will only be going to...
