Been dropping by the Shanty for a while now. It's our favorite place. There's always an interesting beer on special and in the years I've been sampling there has been only one I was not particularly fond of. In other words, I love the special. It encourages me to explore new and interesting brews I've never even heard of. I challenge anyone to find a cheaper, better beer than whatever they've got on special for $2.50. Sure, lots of places have Pabst on tap for $2, and I love me some Pabst, but the Shanty special is flatly always far superior.
The patio is reminiscent of a grotto. It's cozy, there are lots of birds and lots of green leafy things called plants. A very nice place to enjoy yourself in the early afternoon and comfortable to sit out at night even when the place is on the busy side. Plus if your a smoker, you can't really beat sitting at a bar that feels like a backyard enjoying a cigarette with beer in hand.
On another note, my GF can't do gluten, not doesn't do gluten, can't....as in, will go in to shock. The Shanty always has a few varities of gluten-free (not gluten removed) beer and we both enjoy these as well. It's still beer, by the way, just made from sorgham and various other grains that don't contain gluten. Just as good with just as much alcohol, and a bit lighter on your stomach to boot.
If your looking for a place thats a little more lowkey and a bit more social than your typical bar on 4th, The Shanty is your place. Its a fantastic way to start and end a night...
Read moreI stopped on St. Patty's day early afternoon. After having a couple rounds, they claimed they didn't have my credit card. They were extremely patronizing and actually insisted i was using a different name than the one on my card so they couldn't find it which was pretty bizarre. They called the owner over who insisted i paid cash, i explained i did not and i hadn't spent cash, as I don't, and wanted my property. He went crazy, banging his hands on the bar and yelling. I was shocked by his violent, wierd behavior. I told him i was going to phone the police, and he through me out. I waited two hours for the police, who never showed. The owner told other patrons i was scamming them for free drinks, then claimed i lost my card. All this while he screamed at a beggar outside as i waited for the cops. In many countries, over decades, have never had a card stolen by an establishment. The owner inherited this bar and has never done anything else and that is evident by his inappropriate behavior, i guess stealing credit cards is a good way to make up for the downside of mismanagement. He immediately insisted I just call my bank, no big deal (strange since at the same time he was insisting I paid cash). Great scam on travelers as they...
Read moreI love this place! It is probably my favorite bar in Tucson and definitely on the avenue. I am not sure why others have the complaints that they do about this place! It's not a dive bar and it's a bit classier than some other establishments on 4th but nothing wrong with that.
For starters the gorgeous bar tender who looks like a young Brad Pitt greets you when you walk in the door. He has excellent recommendations on beers including a lenghty menu and some great choices on tap. I had a delicious cherry cider beer which was on tap.
The multiple pool tables and Foose ball tables made for a good time. I liked the old photographs on the wall of downtown tucson. The lamps seem to be gas lit and the chairs and tables look original. If you love antique and vintage surroundings then this place is for you! Check out the beautiful patio too... lots of greenery and a...
