We visited Kabuki for the first time tonight for takeout. Based on some reviews about service we decided to preorder a few days in advance. The restaurant called to confirm the day beforehand, but was still around 15 minutes late with preparation. Understanding considering we placed a larger order, but a bit surprising. Note, it also took two weeks of communicating via social media to get a copy of their full menu.
The ingredients were fresh and the value for portion size is decent. However, the rolls were relatively bland. Contextually we tried over a dozen of their specialty and house rolls. Even the saucier or bolder flavor combinations just tasted flat. This may be appealing to some who prefer less spicy mayo, creative mixtures, etc. However, the lack of flavor also came from the rice. Their white rice didn’t have that aroma or taste the top sushi spots boast. Additionally, we appreciated the brown rice availability, but the three rolls incorporating it collapsed quickly.
Overall, Kabuki is a reasonably priced spot for sushi with a long list of options. However, the slower service and muted flavors wouldn’t persuade me to make this a regular in...
Read moreI will never order from here again. I ordered the chicken terayaki. They give you a choice of brown or white rice. They use to give you an option for a side order of fried rice instead but no longer do that so if you want fried rice you have to order a whole 2nd dinner of fried rice for 14 dollars plus, plus an additional soup. What a joke. When I called to ask if they could still give me a side of fried rice instead for a couple extra dollars substitute charge the employee was very rude on the phone. So I purchased the beef fried rice for 15.00 dollars and received a plate of tasteless fried rice with 3 pieces of fatty beef in it. Never again. I use to order from here all the time and am a regular cuatomer but they don’t seem to care. I don’t think they realize that there’s more options in KOP now for Japanese food with way better quality. It’s all about money money money to these people. What a joke. Finally, if you notice all other bad reviews, the owner NEVER responds. Just goes to show you they could care less about the customer. That’s the mentality of this business. ...
Read moreThis is a great Sushi spot. Food is relatively inexpensive ($4-$7 for simple rolls, $10-$15 for most complex rolls). The lunch specials and dinner specials are great values. The sushi itself is quite good. Definitely the best in the area. Similar quality sushi I've had in and around Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD tends to go for about 50% more per roll. They also have udon, hibachi, and fried rice options for the non-sushi eater in your party. I'd avoid the chicken udon, as they tend to overcook the chicken. I recommend the Oshinko appetizer, and their edamame always comes out nice.
They get quite busy during Friday lunch and weekend dinner, and the service slows down during those times, but that's pretty standard for a sushi restaurant. A couple of times when food has been slow, they've brought out free miso soup and salad to tide us over. They also do takeout.
It's BYOB, which is always good for keeping the price down for a sushi meal. There's a beer store one traffic light up (by the Target), and a Spirit Shop across Dekalb from the beer store for your wine...
