Franklin House — Restaurant in Valparaiso

If you like a place filled with subtle hints about the “type of people” they are comfortable with frequenting this establishment, this is the place for you. Odd that they cultivated this atmosphere considering their proximity to Gary, IN; they’ve basically alienated the entire population of that city just off that.

Ordered Irish Nachos and the House Burger.

Irish Nachos were a 4/10 based off of the quantity, 2.5/10 if you believe mayonnaise is the greatest condiment for nachos.

The House Burger was an entirely different ordeal. Three bites in and I could no longer force my tastebuds to withstand the torture. The flavor of this burger could best be described as what it would taste like if you were to lick peanut butter out of a cow’s nostrils.

The patty was dry and the peanut butter only served to dry it out further. In an attempt to counter this, they have slathered the top bun in mayonnaise that tastes as though it were mixed with old fryer oil.

Informed my server that I found the burger so distasteful that I wouldn’t be finishing it and they responded by bringing me my check requesting payment (this was my ONLY interaction with the server outside of ordering and receiving said food).

The fries that came with the meal were obviously allergic to salt or any other seasoning for that matter.

You can't have a better time anywhere else in Valparaiso! The food is excellent, the atmosphere perfect and the service is superb. Weekend events here create a social supernova of various people all celebrating life with friends, strangers, a great meal and a potent drink (or three)...

Franklin House offers daily drink specials, a HUGE selection of craft beers and a simple, well balanced menu featuring appetizers, sandwiches and more... All at an affordable price.

Some of my favorites: The "House Burger": Absolutely amazing! "Barbacoa Street" Tacos (& Nachos): Juicy and incredible! The "House Beast": Unique and full of flavor! "The Pineapple Express": A super spicy, super delicious burger! Fries, Tater Tots and Sweet Potato fries are also always excellent!

Franklin House, you saucy devil. I came for the beer. I stayed for the honey habanero wings. I left… at high speed.

Let me say this: those wings were divine. Perfectly crispy, sweet with a slow-building heat that whispered “I love you” right before it punched me in the colon. Paired with a pint, they were the kind of wings you write sonnets about. Or Yelp reviews. Or desperate texts to your group chat from the bathroom floor at 2 a.m.

Because friends… those wings fought back. What began as a delightful evening of live music and bold flavor ended in what I can only describe as an exorcism by hot sauce. My toilet and I have grown closer. We’ve been through things now.

But was it worth it? Honestly… kind of. If this is how I go, let it be with a wing in my hand and a cold beer in the other.
