Unfortunately, our visit was way below our expectations for Maryhill in Vancouver earlier this week. This is my 5th visiting time as a Premier Wine Club member during the last year. Another Premier member and I were excited and proud to bring 4 guests with us to Maryhill in Vancouver. We were not allowed to sit in the Member tasting room as our group was too large. In retrospect, we should have split up to sit at two tables in this room. Instead we were directed to a table for 6 in the main room which had high barstools and with food and drink, was overcrowded. My first clue that this was continuing to go downhill was that after looking at the menu and waiting patiently, we’re we told to order at the bar. So six people from our table walked over to the bar to order. While at the bar we were informed that for each wine tasting refill we were to return to the bar. This happened 9 times for each person as we had 7 tastings plus the 2 extra for premier members. The food was served at random and the wait staff were not removing plates as we finished, so our group resorted to placing our dishes at a side table. One guest did not enjoy her salad as it didn’t taste fresh. At one point, I refilled my water glass at a water container located in the middle of the room. After that, two carafes appeared at our table. My observations were…there were 4-6 waitstaff. One waitstaff member was eating alone at a table. It appeared that another waitstaff person was sitting with her family, the tasting room was not busy at all, yet 3-4 ladies(waitstaff) were congregated behind the bar or leaning on tables chatting. The waitstaff was not busy at all! The pours of wine at the bar were skimpy for several in our party and we made comment looking at our glasses when we tromped back to our table. Two of our guests had to get up and return to the bar to ask for more balsamic vinegar or pita bread. It doesn’t make any sense to me why we were treated this way. The lady behind the bar could easily had come to our table to refill our wine glasses as we were all drinking the tastings together in order. Two of our members had major mobility issues. The table was so cramped that when the person nearest the wall had to get up, so did the second and third person at that same side of the table, so the first person could get out. This is not the Maryhill experience that I am accustomed to. One of the guests was going to bring her daughter to lunch here next week, but after this experience doesn’t care if she ever comes back. Two more were underwhelmed by the food. My friend and I who are premier members were embarrassed and saddened to see this whole afternoon play out in this way. I’m not sure this was a random experience or if it is ongoing daily. I cannot recommend Maryhill at Vancouver to anyone...
Read moreThree friends joined me last evening for wine and appetizers. It was a perfect evening and we were seated at a table on the deck outside. When our appetizers were served the young waiter positioned himself on one side of the table and started placing the plates of appetizers in the middle of the table. One appetizer plate was a mixture of mushrooms and onions in hot liquid (some kind of cooking oil or butter) and when he placed it in the table directly in front of me, he spilled it all over the table! The oil was running all over and my guy friend jumped up to keep it out of my lap with paper napkins. The waiter didn't say he was sorry, didn't take the appetizer back to the kitchen to be replated, nor did he come back with a wet towel to clean the table. Grease was all over where I sat for the duration of the evening. All of this could have been avoided if the server had been instructed properly how to serve hot dishes. Two of the folks at our table tried to explain to the waiter how to serve a hot dish, but their advice was met with a less than appreciated response. To add insult to injury, there was a substantial gratuity added to our bill which was absolutely undeserving, especially considering we had to place our orders at a counter much like you do at a fast...
Read moreMy friends and I became premium members about a year ago and it was amazing. Great wine, service and food. We were all going often especially during the summer. The last few times we went recently from November it seemed things kept changing. From being served flights to being served individual pours from tasting. On busy nights it took over 2 hours due to lack of service. Then today we went to meet friends to have lunch and wine .. pick up our wine. We were placed in the main seating area and was not advised that they stopped doing table service all together. What a disappointment. So you have to walk to the bar each time you want to taste. So not relaxing. Then we were told if you are in the premium room we would of received table service after the fact. We just feel if we are spending over $1000+ a year ..at least as a premium member you are offered to be in the premium room that offers table service. The food was so bad my friend couldn’t finish her sandwich.. the same sandwich she gets often here. The wine is great.. the way they are managing the service is terrible. Food is pricey and if you can’t even eat it.. just a great disappointment. I hope things get better quickly or unfortunately we are going to discontinue our membership....
