Can't speak to all tacos, but the 956 and choripapa are musts. I also tried the one where the main filling is refried beans ( I forget the exact name) it was good, but definitely a heaping portion of refried beans to other ingredient ratio I wasn't ready for. Would not necessarily recommend that last one if you're not obsessed with refried beans.
I came around 745a on a Wednesday, I walked right inside and there were 2-3 ppl ahead of me (I live nearby and from what I've heard -- on weekends expect to wait in a 25-30 min if you don't show up right when the open).
Pretty straightforward vibe, I asked for recommendations, food came quickly. Tacos are a bit small and maybe a dollar more expensive than I would've like but that being said, 3 tacos will be pretty filling.
They have veg and vegan options.
The charred tomato and cilantro crema (which I noted some reviewers say could be improved upon), I personally have not had any better from any other tex mex place in the DMV for what it's worth.
The tacos are authentic rio grande fare, the owners / main chef is from that region.
They were also given a michelin award a year or two ago for what it's worth.
This is a mt pleasant staple / slice of local culture that started off as as a taco stand on the stoop of the apartment the owners were living in right on Lamont St.
Parking is not great anywhere in mt pleasant so it would be unfair to judge them for that. This is an urban city. You know what you're getting into.

Read moreMan I wanted to love this place. The Southeast Texan in me had this place on my radar for over a year but maybe I just had unreasonable expectations.
I apologize for the “back home” remarks to come but similar restaurants in Texas are my only frame of reference
The good: The breakfast tacos were very good. Homemade tortillas, tasty brisket in the 512 taco, and good sauces on the side. Overall the taste of the tacos were 9/10. Just like home.
The bad: The portions - My first thought when opening the taco was “where is the rest of it?”. I ordered 2 and probably could have eaten 7. For what I paid I was expecting much larger portions. These are not big, barely able to be closed tacos.
The pricing - I got a 512, the uncle P, and a Mexican cola. It was nearly $18 and the same breakfast in Texas is $8 tops. I get we’re in DC but to someone who grew up on breakfast tacos this was a kick in the nuts. Outrageously priced for the portion sizes and because of this I can’t frequent this place weekly or even monthly.
Limited selection - I was disappointed to be limited to the tacos on the menu. This place embraces their “Tex Mex” identity and wears it on their sleeve but I’ve never been to a taqueria back home that didn’t let me just order bacon and egg, or asada con juevos, etc. The girl at the counter gave me a “we don’t do that here” response and that was...
Read moreQueso. It's on three out of La Tejana's tacos and it's divine. The menu calls it "queso drizzle," but it's full of flavor and accents each taco. My five-year-old daughter and I went around 11:30 a.m. on a Thursday for lunch. Here's our experience:
Food: The menu is small, which means they have time to focus on each item and each ingredient. For $24, we ordered six tacos (one of each of the five and we doubled up on the La Choripapa). Each came wrapped in foil inside a hand-made flour tortilla (the owners are from Texas and northern Mexico where flour is queen) with simple ingredients. The stand-outs were the La Choripapa with chorizo and fried potatoes and the El Frijolito with refried pinto beans, cheese and onions.
Drinks: They brew local Lost Sock coffee and sell Mexican Coca-Cola in glass bottles and other sodas. There's a jug of water kept cold on the back counter for all.
Space: Small, it's beautifully decorated with blue tiles and on-brand books on shelves. Notice the inside mural above the window table. There are three outdoor tables along the sidewalk.
Service: It's stellar- efficient, friendly, and proud of what they've created- as they should be!
