Proper 21-K Street — Restaurant in Washington

The first time I went to proper 21k, they were offering a wonderful deal during brunch hours. They offered unlimited food and drinks for a flat fee and everything was delicious! We all got different dishes and enjoyed all of them. We asked for more orders of the potatoes because they were amazing. We left tipsy and satiated!

The second time I went to this same location, 3 months later, I was told they still had this brunch deal but when we arrived we found out that was not the case. We decided to stay anyway and the food was good again, however the kitchen should be embarrassed about their shrimp and grits. As you can see in the picture, there are 3 small shrimp per serving which is not at all worth the price. My sister brought it to the attention of the waiter who very truthfully acknowledged that it is not a good serving and was very understanding when my sister asked to choose a different entree. The waiter said took my sister's order of a burger and also said she would have the chef come out. The chef came out shortly after and also apologized but he said that was just the serving they used. His body language and demeanor suggested that he also knew it was an insufficient amount of shrimp for the dish. She was also offered a comp dessert or drink. However, we were once again disappointed because the burger took a long time to come out and was overcooked based on my sister's temp request. Finally, while the server was friendly, the service was slow and inexcuseable because the restaurant was slow. I probably wouldn't go to this...

This place is truly AMAZING, the customer service by far exceeded my expectations. The first time I visited this establishment was on my lunch break in November 2022. I called ahead of time and asked about the wait time because I had a meeting to follow (I was concerned because of the reviews). The lady informed me that she will notify the staff and chefs. As soon as I got there they knew exactly who I was, the waitress came directly over, took our order we received our food within 20mins. The waitress was soooo attentive we were out within 45mins plenty of time for my meeting! Since my experience was beyond amazing I decided to have my daughters Sweet 16, we had 15 guests and they gave us an entire side of the establishment!!!! The tables we set up beautifully, the service was out of this world. The event planner Stephen was VERY accommodating to every request, ALWAYS responsive. There was another gentleman that oversaw the event during the time which I forgot his name (I apologize) I believe it started with a B, he’s tall, fair skin and blonde hair I believe. He was EXTRAORDINARY!!! When I was closing my tab I was having issues with my card because it was recently compromised and I was issued a new card but my account still had the fraud restrictions on. As we were dealing with the ordeal he was patient, kind, understanding and sincere as we got it squared away. All my guests loved the place, the food oh my goodness is another review itself. Tried this spot for the first time visiting DC & let's just say we will never go back. We had a large party & the restaurant was short staffed & inadequately equipped to provide us with great service. We had to wait over an hour to receive appetizers, drinks were not topped off & we waited yet another hour to receive our entrees. The crab dip was good, & the boneless chicken wings were actually fingers! Our Glasses were very dirty! One table was completely neglected by the wait staff and the food brought out was cold. One person at the "neglected table" did not receive their food until after everyone had finished and was ready to go! The manager on duty was afraid to come speak with our party, stating that due to a prior physical incident on a completely different day, he wasn't comfortable coming to the table. He finally, cowardly came to the table, yet had nothing to offer, but excuses as to why our wait time was so long. Another manager came on duty & was more accommodating in trying to find a reasonable resolution to our awful experience. The GM was telephoned & was combative speaking to the party organizer, & blamed the terrible service on the restaurant "not being able to service large parties," even though they were informed & confirmed the morning of about the sizing! The manager on duty should've rolled up his sleeves, & pitched in to help with the areas that were short.
