The District Fishwife — Restaurant in Washington

As a lover of Union Market and not a lover of seafood, I've visually tuned out Fishwife for years. I grab my latte from Peregrine and walk by Fishwife on my hunt for open seating, but it never once peeked my interested. This past weekend, my wife, daughter, and I met a friend for lunch and she was in line for Fishwife. For the first time, I paid attention to their menu and my Union Market experience is forever changed.

Union Market is full of pop-ups so it's hard to rate for atmosphere or service, but for the food alone, 5 stars for Fishwife. My wife ordered the donburi bowl and LOVED it. The combination of flavors was amazing and it filled her up. Even though I don't like seafood, I do like shrimp. I ordered the shrimp bahn mi and it was perfect. The shrimp bowl was perfectly fried and the balance of spice, cilantro, etc. was spot on. It came with a side of fries which were really good. They were semi-waffle and perfect. Pro-tip: Ask for spicy mayo to dip the fries in.

Edit: Not consistent. I’ve had to edit this review down because I went back to this spot to get the shrimp bahn mi for a second time. The sandwich was not very good, the veggies were soggy and disproportionate to the shrimp, and again the cilantro is packed in bunches into the sandwich with the full stem it’s almost inedible with it included. Sweet potato fries are still good with a spicy mayo. Has the potential to be good but is not there yet.

I’ve seen mixed reviews of this spot but the shrimp bahn mi was a hit! The fried butterfly shrimp was absolutely delicious and the bread was soft and tasty. OMg the worst customer service. I was ordering by pointing at the menue which is easy to I figure out but this girl was distracted looking at her male Colleage and literally ignored me ! I was i am ready to order but she was like I speak only Spanish which is not a problem I was in Mexico and had no issues! Customers service is an art and people like her do give it a bad name. I spoke to the man co-worker who she was there to keep an eye on him! He used that old lame excuse “ her first day” I asked him to train her on some manner.
