At the restaurant we visited in Wayne, NJ, we had a delicious Iskender Kebab. The meat doner was incredibly tasty, and the cubed pita bread beneath it was perfectly cooked in a flavorful sauce. It was light, juicy, and a joy to eat. The butter drizzled over it was probably homemade, as it didn’t upset our stomachs at all. The amount of sauce and butter was just right creating a perfect balance with the döner. It was one of the best Iskender Kebab experiences I’ve had, and the yogurt served on the side tasted like homemade yogurt, though I didn’t ask if it was. But the taste really made me think it was homemade.
I’ve never had such a delicious and satisfying Iskender Kebab in the U.S. before. Yes, I finished it all :) And on top of that, we had a wonderful katmer dessert with ice cream. The katmer was generously filled with pistachios, but despite the rich pistachio flavor, it didn’t leave any bitterness or heaviness in the mouth. I believe the reason for this was the use of high quality clotted cream (kaymak), which was delicious and helped balance out the richness of the pistachios. After having katmer, we didn’t feel any heaviness in our stomachs at all.
One of the things I love most about Turkish culture is the complimentary freshly brewed black tea after a quality dessert.
The service was very attentive, and the staff were dedicated and warm hearted. No matter how delicious the food is, the service and communication of the staff have a huge impact on whether a restaurant is worth returning to. For me, Dervish Restaurant is of high quality in terms of both food and service, and it’s definitely worth visiting again.
The prices were very reasonable for such a tasty food experience, and I hope they maintain this price-performance balance. The restaurant is well decorated but more importantly, it was clean.
Next time, we’ll try different dishes, as there are some highly praised items on the menu. My recommendation to anyone reading this review; if you want to experience delicious Turkish cuisine, grab your drink and give this place a try. We didn’t know the restaurant was BYOB until we learned about it from the friendly...
