Tommy's Tavern + Tap in Wayne, NJ on a lively September evening turned out to be a flavorful stop worth noting. Walking into the restaurant, the first impression was the buzz of energy--a mix of family diners, groups of friends, and couples catching up over drinks. The décor struck a balance between polished tavern charm and modern casual dining, with warm wood tones, industrial lighting, and just enough background music to set the vibe without being overwhelming.
We kicked things off with the Kung Pao Chicken Dumplins. Pan-fried to a perfect golden crisp, they arrived sprinkled with scallions and topped with a delightful crunch of crispy onions. The drizzle of chili oil added a subtle kick that paired beautifully with the tangy, umami depth of the ponzu sauce. These dumplings didn't just serve as an appetizer--they set the tone for the rest of the meal, balancing comfort with a playful punch of flavor.
For mains, the Grilled Chicken Sandwich was a standout in its own right. The creamy pesto was the hero of the dish, rich but not overwhelming, harmonizing with the roasted red pepper's sweetness and the cool, soft bite of fresh mozzarella. All of this was held together by ciabatta bread that had just enough chew to give it substance without overshadowing the filling. The side of fries was classic and crispy, a reliable partner to the sandwich.
The Shrimp Wrap offered something a bit lighter but equally satisfying. The shrimp were tender and fresh, complemented by avocado's buttery texture, crisp lettuce, and tomato that added brightness. The chipotle mayo tied everything together with a smoky creaminess that elevated what could have been an ordinary wrap into something memorable. Again, the fries were a safe, crunchy constant on the plate.
Service was attentive without being intrusive--the staff checked in at just the right intervals, making sure drinks were topped off and plates were cleared smoothly. The pacing of the meal allowed us to enjoy each course without feeling rushed.
At the end of the evening, Tommy's Tavern + Tap delivered on its promise: approachable tavern fare with an elevated twist, in a fun and bustling atmosphere. It wasn't without the occasional background noise of a busy dining room, but that was part of the experience--it felt alive, warm, and welcoming.

Read moreService was amazing. As soon as we entered we were welcomed and seated right away. We ordered fish and fries, veg burger, Wisconsin cheese curds, onion rings and some beer for my friend. Food was fresh, hot and flavourful. I loved burger. The double patty was soo perfectly done and I still could feel that taste. Every dish was perfectly made. However I was quite disappointed with strawberry lemonade as it just less than quarter of glass and full of ice which I finished entire glass in 2 sips I guess. They should work on these non alcoholic beverages served. Overall experience was great with good music and vibes. Even the owner reached out to Every customer and asked feedback as they recently opened in this location. I appreciate that way of reaching us out. That a great way of managing things and upgrading. Finally YAY! We are happy to have Tommy...
