Dinner for four. The other three diners really liked their plates/meals. I ordered a sashimi combo and was impressed by the size. I'm not sure why sashimi seems to always be cut so large, but it looks good on the plate. I need a knife to cut it in to respectable sized pieces. That's not proper to do, but this is Waynesboro, they are used to redneck behavior here.
The miso soup was weak. I was in Japan, but that was almost 40 years ago. I dont recall the miso soup being as bland as it seems almost all American restaurants serve...even those that appear Asian owned. Makes me wonder if they actually eat the stuff themselves.
The pork egg roll was just OK. If you get a salad, as what came with my sashimi combo, ask for the dressing on the side. Mine came smothered in dressing. Way more than I would have used.
An Asian restaurant with a redneck bartender, that's interesting. Seemed like a nice guy but a bit loud. There was a lot of loud conversation in general at the bar, and that was from only a few people! We will go here again for the food, but I'll try to remember to ask to not be seated by the bar where we were.
The service was a bit too good. They weren't busy though. Everything came to the table at the same time. Took too long to get to get cocktails (again, almost no one sitting at the bar...loudly, so there was no reason for the drinks to take that long) and by the time we got them, BAM! Everything else was on the table, there was hardly enough space on the table for the dishes and plates. Next time I will refuse to order until I have had a chance to actually enjoy my cocktail. Knowing my luck, when I do that it will then take a half hour to get my meal!
My wife DID enjoy her cocktail, enough to engage the bartender and let him know. Our server was not familiar with the special halloween cocktails, so without good information I made the mistake of ordering a margarita made with saki and beer instead of tequila. It was OK, way too large volume-wise, and I'm sorry, just anything mixed with margarita-mix is NOT a margarita. In the future, I will not order anything that isn't completely explained to me.
All of that said, this place is worth it for the food. A good variety of menu choices and sushi variations.
The tables are still sticky though. We now think that has to do with the finish on the tables combined with whatever they clean them with. Still...
Read moreWent there for lunch with a friend. We both ordered off of the lunch special menu. I ordered the Sushi & Sashimi lunch (which includes a starter salad and miso soup) with a Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager on tap. He ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken lunch (which includes a choice of soup and rice -- he chose hot and sour soup and fried rice) and a side salad.
The service was excellent and the food was presented attractively.
We both enjoyed our salads. The lettuce pieces were a bit unwieldy, but the mild house dressing was tasty.
My miso soup was mild and soothing. What wowed me was my main dish. I was pleasantly surprised by it, a large and varied portion of sushi and sashimi for just $12. The wasabi was wonderfully biting. Yes, the ginger had the unfortunately common problem of a slightly moldy aftertaste, but this wasn't an issue for me since I didn't want much of it and I'm sure the server would have brought me a new serving if I'd asked. The lager is always a reliable hit.
My friend is a fan of Silk Road's hot and sour soup and fried rice, and wasn't disappointed there. However, the Sweet & Sour chicken was not at all what he'd expected. He thought he was ordering chicken bits bathed in a sweet and sour sauce containing pineapple chunks and diced green pepper, but what he got was a huge platter of tempura-like fried chicken nuggets accompanied by a bowl of red sauce for dipping. No fruit or veggies. It tasted OK and he ate it, but it was not at all what he'd hoped for. He chose not to complain, but instead made a note to self not to order that again. Despite this one disappointment, he'll be back. He's been happy here many times before. It's a favorite spot of his for the food, the service, and a price that's hard to beat for a complete meal -- $9 apiece for the Chinese...
Read moreThe atmosphere was upscale & extremely interesting. Felt rather fancy, though the customers didn't necessarily convey that sentiment, therefore, I felt comfortable. It definitely was a bit more expensive than I had otherwise expected, but not completely unreasonable. I had a blueberry daiquiri, which the bartender explained that he had to improvise. It wasn't as pleasant as daiquiri's that I have had in the past, although I was polite & drank it. The portions were decent sized for the price. I ordered chicken lo mein, a spring roll & a pork egg roll. The egg rolls were excellent & after inquiring as to the sauce they were served with, I can confidently say that the "duck sauce" was amazing. The chicken lo mein was lacking in vegetables for my taste. Lo mein that I have had at other establishments has included more color & flavor. However, it was well prepared & tasted pleasant & authentic. My partner for the evening ordered chicken teriyaki, a spring roll & a pork egg roll & was pleased with the entirety of their meal. If the tables & leather bound menus had been cleaner & my partner would've received their beverage without a reminder to our waitress, I would've left a four star review.
Overall: pleasant experience, intriguing atmosphere, somewhat fancy, slightly higher prices than expected, friendly & personable waitress & very good food. Price: Two entrees, 2 pork egg rolls, 2 spring rolls, 1 daiquiri, 1 coke =...
