I live around the corner and wanted nothing more than to fall in love with this new cafe: it’s a boutique chain, well-reputed with early reviews, and opens earlier than the local competition. What’s not to love? I brought my out-of-state parents for breakfast this morning to sample the offerings. We ordered drinks, a slice of coffee cake, and the Mediterranean chicken sandwich (all-day breakfast and lunch menu). The drip coffee, oak milk latte, and oat milk chai latte was all over the map. Drip coffee was as expected, oat milk latte was good but a forced swap because the chain refuses to carry soy milk, and the chai latte was disappointingly cold. The coffee cake featured chunks of fruit and was generously portioned, delicious, and moist. The Mediterranean chicken sandwich was stale and boring, with the protein edges looking and tasting like crusty jerky and the flavor nothing to write home about. Pretty bummed. Willing to try this spot again, but the mediocre experience hovering at $50 along with the low converted garage ceilings and less-than-warm interior design will likely mean a last resort for an early morning. Oak Street Deli remains that joint all primary coffee and...

Really nice cappuccino! Also a bomb chocolate rugelach. ❤️ They use counter culture beans and the space is clean and well lit. I think this might be one of the only places in the Union City/Weehawken area that serves third wave coffee. Also the fact that it is open at 8am is a game changer for folks in the area who want a nice espresso based drink before work!

When I went in, there was laughter and young moms sipping their lattes with kids nearby (plenty of space for a stroller!). It seems like George and the team are really kind and excited to serve the community. So glad to have Gotan in the neighborhood!!!

Will have to return to try the savory breakfast and lunch offerings. Looking forward to coming here more often. 🥰

Update: Just got the chicken shawarma and the challah french toast (special) and both were AMAZING. Highly recommend. So much value for your money and really delicious...

Today I witnessed something that really impressed me. Coming from NYC you can really appreciate good customer service. Emily a lovely young lady was behind the counter and she presented herself so well in the face of an irate middle aged lady who instead of trying to compromise on the absence of the gluten free bread immediately jumped down Emily's throat. I have to admit I felt like I was back in NYC and oddly enough I felt like I was home again. But I want my new environment to feel more at peace and even though that was not the case with this client and how she reacted to something that could have been easily resolved; I observed how effortlessly Emily took control and handled the situation while maintaining her respect. Thanks to the Gotan staff because I love your cappuccino's, your great big smiles and those...

You can't go wrong with the BLAT here! It's absolutely loaded with perfectly cooked bacon. The Fattoush tasted fine but wasn't very filling; it would have been great if there was some sort of grain like quinoa/couscous, or at least more pita. There was also a great variety of pastries available. There were plenty of open tables inside on a Saturday morning. Service is friendly, but there was a bit of a wait for the food. Unfortunately, they are not dog friendly, so for dog owners who like to pick up breakfast/coffee on their morning walks, this is not the spot. (The Oak still is, though!)
