Most of the produce is fresh, but make sure you check everything before you buy it. There's always a selection of soon to be expired (or sometimes already expired) produce on sale for $1 which is an unbeatable deal if you get something useable and can cook it same day. I honestly do not know what this place was called more than thirty years ago, but at least, for the last twenty years, this has been a grocery store.
