We have eaten at Sumo's multiple times as Dine In, Take out, and even delivery via DoorDash. We probably eat eat here 2-3x/month. The food taste has always been excellent and this one of our favorite Wenatchee eateries. After today, December 31st, we may never be back.
Our first visit ever we went for Hibachi and we had only lived in the area a couple months (late 2021) This place was recommended to use in January 2022. Even though Hibachi is prominently advertised they don't actually offer the type of Hibachi where they cook at your table.
You can order meals that come plated and are Hibachi style.
Fast forward to today, December 31st. We went in for Happy Hour (around 1pm on a Saturday). We were seated quickly and we had a party of 4 (2 adults and 2 toddlers). Our waiter seemed a bit disorganized from the start, but his section was filling up pretty quickly for it being an afternoon.
We order an appetizer, kids meal, and drinks and asked him to come back for the entrees. One adult was ready, but the other was still deciding on which roll to order. He wanted to take the order of the adult who was ready and come back for the 2nd one - okay no big deal. We order one adult entree.
It takes less than 5 minutes for the 2nd adult to finish deciding, however the waiter doesn't come back for nearly 20 minutes and we have to flag him down.
The appetizer came out at the same time as the kids meal and one of the adult entrees. I made a comment that "darn it, I ordered the wrong thing." We meant to order Sushi, but had ordered Samishi. Now, usually this would prompt a waiter or waitress to come check when that comment is made to a food runner - but nope we were not checked on.
Fast forward, the 2nd entree never came out. He checked on us once and when we attempted to bring up the 2nd entree he didn't wait for an answer from us on how everything was going. We hade empty drinks, got up and hunted down our own chopsticks. Hot plates and full drinks including alcohol were set directly in front of toddlers. Eventually, I asked about the 2nd entree after tables who came in way after us had their food.
He had never put the 2nd entree order into the kitchen. My family had an entire meal and I sat there with ZERO plates in front of me and he never asked a single question about what might be missing. He did try to put in the 2nd entree at the very end of the meal when my partner had finished eating and the toddlers were wrapping up their food. I declined as that would not have been a pleasant meal as the kids were ready for naps.
I had to ask for the tickets and for a box for the rest of the kid's meal to go. At one point he tried to take an empty folder that had the receipt in in before we had a chance to review it.
When I went to check out up front, he followed up there to run the tickets and I told him I would not be giving him my credit card - that I needed a manager. Another server stepped in and told me he (our server) was still training. If he was still training, then someone should have been checking on him, checking his tables, and overseeing his interactions with guests.
Eventually, a manager came and I explained how poorly the service was. The manager said: "I feel bad that happened.", but no actual apology for attempts to correct the situation (I.E. Let me make your missing food to go and have it bumped in front of other tickets.)
We paid for the food we did receive in full.
I do not know if we will be back. I am hoping there is another Sushi restaurant somewhere in Wenatchee. If we can replace this style/type of food with another restaurant then we won't be back.
This was one of my favorite places in the area to eat, but why spend the time getting kids ready to leave, diaper bags packed, timing it so they act well etc - when the food your order and expect to pay for it never shows up.
I think it is important here to note, that there were 5 other tables in the immediate vicinity and each of them were checked on several times during...
Read moreSumo was a great place. I took part in the hibachi and sushi. I would recommend this place for a nice family outing or a date night! The 2 reasons behind not getting a full 5 star is first the noodles that the hibachi dinner come with are just spaghetti noodles that had very little flavor. The 2nd reason is because they charged extra for fried rice. Of course it was only $3 but still when i think of hibachi i think of fried rice being included in that.
Everything else was great. The cook had a great personality and kept the whole table entertained. I had filet migon ordered blue and he mad it perfect. The sushi was also another highlight! Tasted very fresh and delicous!
Would definetly go back!
UPDATE 2021:
No good. Covid has destroyed this place. They no longer offer hibachi but they don't tell anyone that until they get there in person.
AGAIN THEY DO NOT DO HIBACHI!!!
The food isn't the same. Half the dishes were cold when they came out. We waited for over 2 hours to even get our food.
However a big highlight is the staff. Our waitress was AMAZING!!! she was super nice and funny. She took great detail in taking our long order (8 people). The manager was also super nice and helpful when brought the above issue to his attention.
I would still go back, but not for a long long time hoping they fix these "covid" issues. Hopefully people in Washington will wake up and realize covid is not a big deal and we can't keep using it as an excuse for...
Read moreOk the food was good. If I am not happy, I try to wait a few days to review. My entire issue is with our service. Our server was nice, clean cut, well spoken. Took our order. We ordered appetizers, my wife a main dish, and I ordered 4 various sushi rolls. My wifes main dish arrives very quickly to the table. This was our first indication something was off. Then 2 of my rolls arrived. Still no sign of our appetizers. Once my wife had almost finished off her main dish another one of my rolls was served, and another 5 minutes later our appetizers finally came out of the kitchen. At this point we are thinking ok maybe this is like one of those slow down and really appreciate it meals, we talked about it and patiently waited on my premiere signature roll I had ordered… You know the big bad boy… 5 minutes roll by and our server drops by for the “do you need anything else?”. He apologized and got the kitchen to make it up really quick. I appreciated that, and ate a couple pieces. My wife asked for a to go box and he handed us a brown paper bag, no tray no box. Brown lunch sack with their logo?!? We see another table get a little tray to put their sushi in and a bag. Im not sure why the service was so inconsistent from one patron to the next. Very...
