"Chicago Fine Dining Guide: There's Something for Everyone!"

Highly recommend Beatrix! We came on a Saturday night for one of my best friends birthday dinner celebration. I strongly recommend making a reservation! To get seated, make sure your party is there. You can make reservations through OpenTable and collect those points! During the pandemic, they closed “w Fulton market” street and all of the restaurants have outdoor seating and pods available. I thought this was a great idea and it’s going to be so nice for warmer weather nights in the Chi. We did sit inside. All staff did have on mask and hand sanitizer is available. Guests are required to wear masks while in the restaurant, masks are required during all interactions with the service team and only to be removed when eating or drinking. Before seating, all guest did have our temperature checked. They have digital menus and it does say On their menu, to help offset restrictions on their business resulting from the pandemic, there is a a 5% surcharge added to the check. Similar to other restaurants you can let them know if you want it removed. The ambiance is chic, dimmed lighting and the space is well-decorated. I loved the light fixtures, I’m weird! The tables were spaced apart, so we didn’t feel as if we were on top of anyone which was nice. The chairs for the round table were ether cushioned or non, all very comfortable. They had a great selection of beverages and wine list. My friends and I all participated in the restaurant week menu. This is $39 per person and the dinner menu is available daily after 4:00PM. You get to select one of their starters, entrees and dessert, as well as one their cocktails listed. This was such a great deal and I highly recommend to take advantage of it! The portions were perfect for one person or even if you wanted to share so the other guest can order something different too. In our party, for the starters we tried their hummus which came with a delicious fresh tomatoes and cucumber salad, flavorful hummus and warm naan. I was hesitant about combining the cold tomatoes on top of the hummus/naan, but it was so delicious! We also tried their local burrata with roasted beets and crispy quinoa. I am personally not a beets person, but two of our friends in our party enjoyed it. The only con was, they wanted more of the bread. For entrees, one of our friends tried their Cavatelli with chicken bolognese and the remaining of our party ordered the skirt steak chimichurri. Both dishes were cooked perfectly and had flavor, they were delicious! The skirt steaks came with fries and grilled shishito peppers. The peppers were a good combo with the steak as they were bit smoky, but they didn’t have spice to them. I do enjoy spice, so I would have liked that, but even so still a delicious combination. The entrees were a good size portion, good to eat alone or again to share (COVID friendly of course). For dessert, we tried their oh my! Carmel pie, and the pie definitely fits the name. Oh my, oh my, it was fantastic. I am normally not a caramel person and when I first saw the pie I was like oh great look how thick this is I’m not going to eat it and it is complete opposite! It was so smooth and creamy! And the shortbread cookie crust was my favorite part. We also tried their chocolate cake which was very heavy, but delicious! I highly recommend either dessert, and the side of whip cream I would say it is, but obviously made better was very much appreciated! Our server was fantastic, sadly I didn’t get his name and I don’t have my Receipt. He was very friendly and made sure we were good all night. Since my friend did not want a candle for her birthday or to sing, he did give my friend a to-go dessert which was very sweet and made her feel special.

My son wanted to treat me somewhere nice and has been to this location several times. He knew enough to make reservations. The reservation was for 5pm on a Friday. Not really a crowded time yet. There was ample seating both inside and outside, and since it was a beautiful day, they had their large windows open so the inside received fresh air. There were multiple empty tables outside and inside. We asked if we could sit outside but were told it would be a 30 minute wait. Since we had another appointment at 7pm my son didn't think we should wait. The hostess, knowing we preferred to sit outside, could have seated us at one of the inside empty tables along the open windows (she seated other couples at several of those tables just a few minutes after she seated us so it wasn't like they didn't have a server for them). Instead, we were seated in the back by the kitchen. My son was kind enough to take the seat with the view of the kitchen so that I would have the view of the inside of the restaurant. We sat for 15 minutes before someone came to take our drink order. Apparently we had been seated at a table which had no assigned server, which is why I'm giving service two stars. Once we did get a server, she was fantastic. She was friendly and attentive. She deserves five stars even if the overall service didn't. We were in time to get drinks at Happy Hour prices. We got the Moscow Mule and later my son ordered a Margarita. The drinks were great and would have been worth the $14 regular price. My son had been to this location before and was disappointed at the menu. He said when he'd been there July 8, they had twice as much on the menu. I'm not sure why the menu was reduced, but they had a hamburger that sounded good so the smaller menu didn't really matter to me. It came with fries and was cooked well done like I requested. It was very good and I would order it again. We also got the caramel pie which was incredible. My reason for giving an overall rating of only 3 stars, beside the poor initial service - the 3% generic "Restaurant Surcharge". I hate being taken advantage of like that. It seems the in thing to do these days so that places don't have to increase their menu prices, but I'm tired of it. If it's to cover the credit card fee, why not just increase your menu prices and then give a "cash" discount instead so it doesn't make credit card customers feel like they're being gouged. Overall, not a terrible experience but it could have been better. It might have been an off day so I'd be willing to give it another go (especially to get another piece of the caramel pie!)

I called in an order for two whole caramel pies a week in advance for pickup. The person on the phone who took my order was pretty thorough in getting details for me (went back and forth between me and the bakery to get answers for best method of transport 9+ hours of car travel in addition to freezing for a month before an event) and gave me the option to have the pies frozen or vacuum sealed. I was recommended and so opted for vacuum sealed after asking for best recommendations based on my circumstances. We ended the phone call with a pickup time of between 3 and 4pm. I left the conversation grateful for the attention to detail and care for my order. That changed upon pickup day.

I called a few hours before my pickup time the day of and was placed on a long hold and finally was assured my order was being put together. That was the first sign that something wasn't right and raised a potential red flag as they should've already had my order well in advance. Nonetheless, I trusted they were handling it and making sure it was properly prepared and ready for pickup at our appointed time. I ended up arriving to pick up my pies at 4:30pm, a half hour after our scheduled pickup time. I walk up to the bar to check in and get my pies paid for. The two folks helping me were kind and did their best to figure out my order. It took a good 25 minutes before my order was brought out. During one of the back and forths, I checked with one of the employees that was helping run my order that my pies were indeed vacuum sealed. They came back and reported that they were not. A manager finally came out with my caramel pies in regular cake boxes. She told me they do not even have the option of vacuum sealing pies as they don't carry the equipment for that and that I could have had the pies frozen if I had opted for that but that it was too late now since it would have had to have been done overnight. I am both flabbergasted and disappointed because I made prior arrangements to have these pies ready for pickup at a specific time and prepared a specific way (an option I was given, not one I suggested; I didn't even know vacuum sealed was an option until the employee who took my order a week prior had given it to me) and it ended up not even being prepared until I arrived at the restaurant which resulted in over a half hour visit which only added to the 9+ hour drive I had ahead of me.

I purchased these caramel pies for my baby shower because it's the best pie ever but I am extremely disappointed in how my order was mishandled. Not only was my order not put together until I arrived despite ordering a week in advance and calling a few hours prior to make sure the order would be ready at the scheduled pickup time, the option of vacuum sealing the pies given by the person who took my order over the phone a week ago was not honored and in fact, not even a real option. The irony is that had I not been presented with that made-up option, I certainly would have opted for the pies to be pre-frozen. At the end of the day, it seems my order wasn't even placed and it was treated as a walk-in to-go order.

I asked the manager for any compensation like in the form of a discount for the mistakes and all she said she could offer were some pastries. I was speechless for a few breaths as my brain had to process being offered some at-least-half-day-old pastries to compensate for such an oversight and mistreatment of my whole pie pre-order. Had it not been for the extra care needed surrounding the situation of traveling with the pies for 9+ hours plus needing to freeze them for a month before they're consumed, it wouldn't have been as big of a deal. But because so much care needed to go into how these pies were handled to keep them preserved for my baby shower, it was a big deal. In the end, one of the pies broke in half upon arriving home despite keeping it on ice and snug in a hard-shell cooler to prevent it from moving around. I expected better service from not only this establishment, but one under the umbrella of Lettuce...
