From the moment we walked into feld, we knew were in for an experience unlike any other. Jake and his entire team greeted us in the vestibule the instant we opened the door. It was quite a welcome surprise and really set the tone for an evening that was to defy all expectations and preconceived notions.
When I booked my seats, I noted that both members of my party are vegetarian. Jake personally emailed me to confirm my dietary restrictions and I was grateful for the personal attention.
The feld team are a delightful group of people who clearly have passion for what they do. There's a vibrancy and vitality in the plating, composition, and presentation of each dish. The progression of the tasting menu had a beautiful rhythm, with big moments and quiet moments, dishes that I had a frame of reference for, and others that were totally new to me.
We were offered a wine pairing, but as neither of us imbibe, we politely declined. To our surprise, we were informed that they have non-alcoholic pairings as well, which we opted for. The in-house crafted beverage pairings were exquisite and spoke to the creativity of the person who dreamed them up.
Jake visited our table several times throughout the meal, and we observed that all parties in the restaurant received the same care and attention. It was a convivial atmosphere, almost intimate in that it felt to me like all the diners were joining together to experience and share this special meal, which we were.
Now to the decor - my goodness this place is beautiful. From the inlaid logo in the floor to the minimalist vases adorning the wall, there are thoughtful touches everywhere. The lighting is particularly excellent; highlighting the tables where the team do their work, and indirect and diffuse for the diners. Even the washrooms are beautifully lit, with suitably upscale fixtures.
My partner and I have had the good fortune of dining at a few superb Chicago restaurants, and we are grateful that we have had the chance to enjoy the creative and truly delicious cuisine at feld. We look forward...
Read moreWe ate at Feld on July 27th, and all 3 of us loved it. The food was fantastic - well thought out, well presented, and just plain delicious!
The 30 course menu allowed for so many flavors to be presented and shine through - the theme for our visit was sweet corn. And while each of us had a course or two that didn't totally hit the mark, that's expected, and also ok - we weren't left wanting with so many other options and courses. We were also given the opportunity to sit out back around the fire with Chef Jake, eat a smore, chat, and give him feedback.
I've seen a few reviews that are comparing Feld to Michelin-starred restaurants, so I'm going to make a very bold statement, and then explain it: I would eat at Feld, any day, over French Laundry. With that said, I think this is an unfair comparison. While the concept of the two are similar, Feld is just starting on its journey, still establishing itself, with offerings at vastly different price points. I much preferred the chef's table layout, the relaxed atmosphere, and the incredibly friendly nature of the whole team at Feld to that of the formal experience at French Laundry. I love that the food is served and presented by the people making it. I love that we were able to talk and joke with the team. I love that there's room for a single dish to not hit the mark for my taste, but still allow the overall meal to be absolutely exceptional.
There just wasn't anything about the experience I didn't enjoy. I can happily say we'll be back again, to see what Chef Jake and team come up with, as they continue to create amazing food and evolve this already-exceptional new...
