My husband and I went for breakfast, I was excited to go because the restaurant has good reviews. All I can say is the breakfast is way overpriced for the quality of the food. I ordered the Chilaquiles verdes. The sauce was good, the cheese and crema on top was tasty, the beans on the side were very good but... But the actual chilaquiles were a let down. They tasted like someone took a bag of thin tortilla chips and poured green salsa on them. They were mushy which is okay when the sauce is very cooked into them but the sauce was kinda just on top. Now let me just say right here and now I like both crispy and soft chilaquiles. But the flavor needs to be cooked in. And I think the texture of the tortilla pieces was just too thin to hold the sauce correctly and (although the sauce was great) the dish tasted cheap because of that. The other thing was there was no avocado on the side, you have to purchase avocado on the side. It was sliced nice and would have been nice if it wasn't so brown. I got steak with the Chilaquiles. The steak looked grey, with no char marks at all, no browning. It was just grey. Not really appetizing to look at but I went ahead and tasted it, the flavor was not bad, and it was actually very tender. But there was a line of gristle and fat going right through it. I don't think I would have minded so much if the piece of meat wasn't so small. When I cut away the gristle there was barely any meat left. Ugh $18 for the Chilaquiles, $3 for the avocado, and $5 for the steak piece ($26 total for a mediocre plate of chilaquiles). Nope, don't do it. My husband got the steak and eggs. His steak was also grey and very small. It was not 5 oz. Looked like half a slice of minute steak. He ordered scrambled and was surprised to find they came folded, they were delicious flavor wise and texture wise, he said they were fluffy and yummy. But he was very disappointed in the steak. The side of potatoes were just fair according to him and very under seasoned. Included was a side of pancakes, he didn't like the texture of them and felt they were very dense and lacked flavor. Steak and eggs $18
Now on to the coffee, the Cafe de olla was very good, a little on the sweet side. But I would go back for that coffee. My husband had the house coffee and also enjoyed his coffee, remarked it was on the stronger side which he liked. Olla coffee $5.50 , reg coffee $5 The service was very good up until we were done, then it took a while to get our check. It was not busy in there. Total with tax $60.10 + 20% tip So over $70 for a mediocre to average breakfast, (not worth it). Better off paying a couple dollars more and going to The Smith or somewhere more upscale and getting a great brunch deal on a way better steak. And if you're craving chilaquiles there's way better ones around the corner at casa del Pueblo... just sayin. How are you gonna charge these prices for slivers of steak and paper thin tortilla chips with salsa thrown on top? Save your money and go somewhere with...
Read morePlease read this before supporting this business!!!!! Please consider stopping supporting Frida Room on 18th and Laflin. My girlfriend and I had a horrible experience as employees there where we accumulated many hours on the clock to only not wanting to get paid by the manager Sully and owner Angel. I managed to get a decent pay ($6.5 an hr no tips) but my girlfriend got $200 for 100 hrs in two weeks with no tips (2$ an hr)! Full story: About a years and a half ago I worked there as a busser after my former job (nitecap) closed down. I had always seen a “help wanted” sign every time I passed by. The talk of pay was always evaded for some reason by the manager starting from the interview until two days later when I was dismissed. They weren’t satisfied with my work and that’s ok, I respect that. But when I asked for my pay they said that they weren’t going to pay since I was only in training. As it turns out training should still be paid and it is illegal to no do so. The owner would only come in and out and was always in a rush so I never got a chance to meet. Fast forward My girlfriend was also in need of a job so she decided to give it a go at the same place. I should’ve convinced her not to. Basically she worked 13 days straight from open to close. Every time she asked about the pay they kept on dragging it. Finally when she said she was going to quit if they didn’t pay her the manager said that they wouldn’t pay her since she doesn’t have a ssn!!!! She assumed that since my gf grew up in Mexico and has a strong accent. She’s a citizen. They never asked me for my ssn when I started working there. After quitting and meeting with them many times they paid me the $6.5 an hour and her $2 an hour no tip. We learned from an employee that workers usually stayed only for a few days because of this situation. That’s why there was a permanent “help wanted” sign at the front! This left a lot of stress and trauma on us but mostly my girlfriend. For a long time we thought the best way of coping was ignoring what happened but we felt necessary to share this. Please share and consider not going to this horrible place. It saddens my that this is done between Latinos when we’re supposed to help...
Read moreI ordered the avocado toast and it had an option for either egg or bacon on it. I said I would like both egg and bacon, so add the egg and add a side of bacon. When the food arrived, there was no egg, only bacon on top. I asked the sever about it and she said that egg doesn't come on it. So I asked for a side of egg. When asked how I want the egg, I said sunny side up. I began to eat my food only to find that the toast was soggy, making all of the topping fall off of it. The flavors were good, but it was really just bread with three slices of avocado, pico, and three bacon strips. I got up to use the restroom and when I came back, my eggs were at the table. They were not sunny side up, they were scrambled. I ate my food, knowing that this server was probably just a high schooler working a casual summer job. When she brought the bill, I was charged for the "side" of bacon that was supposed to come with my item. I informed her of this mistake and she adjusted to bill to take it off. When it came time to pay, my dining partner and I gave our cards and a $5 off coupon to the server and asked to split the total down the middle. When she came back, she informed me that she made a mistake and forgot to use the coupon until after she ran one of the cards. So the coupon was taken off of one diners bill and not the total cost of the meal. Now, if just one of these things happened while I was there, that would have been fine, but to have every single aspect of my meal messed-up in one way or another is just too many mistakes. To extend this story a bit more, the woman sitting at the table next to me also had her order messed up. She asked for no onions and there were big slices of red onion on both her sandwich and in her salad! I will never go here again. I will never suggest this place to anyone. I will in fact, warn people...
