I’ve been doing my best to eat every spicy fried chicken sandwich that is available in this fantastic city, and it was Roost’s time to be tested.
I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich Homestyle Nashville Hot on a biscuit and fresh cut fries, and their peach cobbler. After realizing I couldn’t get a cup of tap water, I decided to order a lil jug of lemonade. My brother ordered the 3 tenders with fries, and a biscuit.
The staff was friendly and seemed like they were having a great time at work, and professional enough—I am at a fried chicken joint not Mastro’s—so service was more than adequate.
The food came out relatively quick, and was fresh & piping hot.
The sandwich was very good, not dry (hard with a chicken breast), and spice flavor was good-to-great—for being second down from their spiciest option—the sandwich wasn’t SPICY spicy (my tolerance is probably a touch higher than some), but that’s all good and the sandwich didn’t stand a chance—10/10 it was devoured.
The biscuit, Fries, and Peach Cobbler get honorable mentions because they also were great to help round out my meal which was 10/10 for quality and flavor.
I got to try the tenders my brother ordered and they were also great—breading was not overdone, spice was similar to mine, and they were decent in size (as they should be for the price). The meal was very filling, and the lemonade was great.
The only thing I wanted to address is price: this is not a cheap place to eat. In fact, I would say their price point is on the higher end from other spots I’ve tried. The meal was around $30 per person (if you also get lemonade) and the lemonade (1qt/32oz) was $7–THAT IS A LOT for lemonade—so much so, I am guessing the employee may be new because when she rang me up for two lemonades, she thought the total (~$15) was wrong (it wasn’t)—haha. I think a fairer price would be less, but it WAS good and I overall didn’t regret getting it.
To sum it up.. the service was great, the food was great, and (imo) you gotta make that west loop/west town money to eat here with any regularity. Personally, I will move up to their spiciest level next time I visit.
I will definitely return and would have no problem recommending this place to anyone looking for a great spicy fried chicken...
Read moreLet's just say this wasn't a good experience. Attitude makes a difference, and the young lady with glasses at the front counter should NOT be the one working with customers. I was first to place my order, the house style chicken sandwich with fries and a lemonade. I stepped to the side so my brother could order. He said, "I'll have the same thing he's having, no drink, add cheese. I noticed on the register screen that there was a fry by his order and not by mine. So I asked... did you get my fry on my order? To which, she said yes. As we stood watching her put the order together... she only made one fry. As she handed me my tray, I said (in a friendly tone), I thought you said you got the fry on my order? She said, "You didn't ask for a fry. He did." My brother jumped in and said,"I didn't ask for a fry. I simply said I'd have what he ordered with no drink, add cheese." I replied, "That's why I asked if you got my fry on the order?" She told me I don't have to get an attitude. All I had to do was say I wanted an order of fries. Though she made the mistake, though she had the sarcastic tone, though she'd clearly gotten an attitude... somehow, it was my fault? She mumbled to herself as she rang up an order of fries and walked away as if she was done talking to us, saying nothing about what I owed or my form of payment. Her attitude made her assume I was paying the $3.30 with my card, so there was no longer a need for her to connect with me as a customer. A customer who at this point had not raised my voice, been disrespectful, nor said or did anything to warrant the attitude and lack of attention she was given. At this point, I no longer wanted the fries... and honestly, I didn't want to eat there at all! However, my brother said we have the food already, and we could just share his fries. After ALL of that...the fries were cold, overly salty, and did not taste well. The biscuits we hard on the top and dry throughout... to the point, they split into pieces upon trying to eat the sandwich. The coleslaw on the sandwich had NO flavor. The ONLY saving grace was that the chicken was hot and seasoned. Just because it looks good on Instagram does not mean it'll always be a good experience. ...
Read moreOMG, y’all. I wanted to give to 5 stars sooo bad, but my purse said NO. I paid $30 for what you see pictured. I could not say no to my taste buds. I really wanted one and everything but I settled for this. I swear I felt like I was back home and NC, and was the Carolina meal without some Cheerwine? Not nothing! So let’s get to it.
Sunrise Chicken Sandwich: What’s the Carolina meal without some swine? NOTHING! lol. So I got this sandwich on the biscuit of course and I chose the original heat level and then I got a side of hot honey sauce and dipped the sandwich. (Yes, I’m a dipper.) Perfection. The chicken was crispy and juicy. Which was a total surprise to me because I do not like chicken breast because they’re usually dry but this one…juicy. I’m also a biscuit kind of store so I’m in love. I’m in love with the biscuit. They sell their biscuits frozen and you can bake them at home. I almost got it, but I would’ve been doing too much.
Cheerwine: I know y’all are probably like what is this? Just imagine if Dr. Pepper and Cherry Coke had a baby. That’s the best way I can describe it.
Mac & Cheese: I got the mac & cheese because I saw it was a popular item. It wasn’t my favorite. It was creamy mac & cheese but it seem to be a water down creamy mac & cheese. It wasn’t for me, but I did eat it and I did finish it. I ended up crumbling the bacon that fell off my chicken sandwich and putting it on top of the Mac.
Peach Cobbler: I’ma be honest, when I saw this I was super excited because it looks exactly like the peach cobbler that my family and I make. And when I tell you, it tasted like it too. I’m in love. I’m literally in love and I’m so happy that somebody has brought this type of peach cobbler to Chicago. Usually you see the peach cobbler with the pie crust (which I appreciate), but this peach cobbler right here! This style of peach cobbler is my first love and I fell in love all over again.
Another thing that I must mention is that the food traveled well. So I probably stay a good 10 to 15 minutes from this location. Surprisingly I did not eat in the car. I actually waited till I got home and everything was still a good temperature...
