I've been here multiple times and I've had both 5-star experiences and 3-star experiences. The drinks have been great, the atmosphere is perfect, and the service has always been spectacular. Unfortunately the food has not been consistent. This is the most important factor but surprisingly I still think RG does enough good to only lose 1 star especially because when the food is good it's hands down some of the best in the area. Let's start with the good. The fried cauliflower on the menu is to die for. I want to explore more of the appetizers but it's so hard to not order the cauliflower. The dinner menu changes from season to season but I absolutely fell in love with their cheeseburger, a "royale with cheese". Sadly this is where some of the inconsistency comes in. I was telling all my friends that this was probably one of the best burgers in the city but when I took a group this past Friday the burgers were not the same, a completely different flavor profile, night-and-day different. Either the menu changed or they had some new people in the kitchen. Either way to go from serving one of the tastiest burgers in the city to a burger that doesn't stand out is not a good sign on consistency. If I'm spending $16 on a burger I want to know it's going to be good every time not just sometimes. Overall Royal Grocer is great, take a chance on the royale with cheese, If you're lucky you'll get one of the best burgers...
Read moreMy husband & I have been frequenting for over a year now. The staff is usually on the rude side, unwelcoming & extremely not attentive. Upon walking in each visit they seem reluctant to seat us based on the kitchen closing an hour before closing time. We know this! You see us often. We come in for a night cap a couple times a week. As far the food goes & cocktails go, it’s been inconsistent for the past year. Food is usually on the salty side & the portions are less than generous given the price points. At times I’ve ordered a cocktail that clearly wasn’t what I ordered, but was told it was after I pointed out the mistake. Tonight I feel the need to leave this review as we stopped in for a night cap. Again with the unwelcoming attitude! Instead of- Hello! Welcome! it was the usual- our kitchen is closed. We took seats at a table. The bartender/server was completely unprofessional when taking our drink order. She slouched up against the banquette where I was sitting. I found that to be completely off putting. Came back with our drinks. He ordered a beer & I ordered a Purple Haze. I couldn’t drink my cocktail as it was poorly made. Obviously it was missing ingredients. We sat there for 45 minutes. Not one time did she come back to the table to check to see if we needed anything. My husband had to get up from the table to ask for our check. We want to love this place it’s a half a block away from our...
Read moreThe Royal Grocer is hands down our family’s favorite spot in Bucktown! Every single visit, the staff is so warm, attentive, and accommodating. It truly feels like dining with friends. Whether it is just the two of us or a group of 12, they always go out of their way to make sure we are taken care of, even without reservations.
Their hospitality extends beyond people too. They treated our dog Khaleesi like royalty and she absolutely loved being spoiled there.
The food is consistently excellent. My personal favorites are the burger, which is the best in the neighborhood, and the kale salad, which I could eat every day. The patio is such a gem and we are thrilled they have added trivia nights. It makes the atmosphere even more fun and lively.
A special shout-out to Tik, who is incredibly friendly, warm, thoughtful, and kind. You can tell she genuinely loves what she does and makes every visit memorable. The whole team including Matt, Jackson and Garret are the whole reason we keep coming back!!
The Royal Grocer is a true neighborhood treasure, supportive of other local small businesses, and a perfect spot for a date night, friends’ night out, or a big group gathering. Hospitality here is outstanding and I cannot recommend them...
