Edit: Dec 2020- Very disappointed in our experience tonight. We have been coming here for years. Tonight my daughter earned her Black Belt, which she has been working hard for many years to achieve. It was already a difficult and lack luster evening for her as much of her ceremony had to be completed on zoom. We decided to come here afterwards to try to add something special to the evening (her absolute favorite is sushi). Our server of the bat was not very friendly and seemed like she wanted to rush us to order. Once we ordered I snuck over to one of the hosts and a chef and told them why we were there and asked if they could possibly do something special for her. The chef was very excited for her and seemed to want to help. The host said he would talk to the owner Jenny. He came by the table to tell me Jenny would come talk to me. I was giving him gestures to please keep it on the down low as I wanted it to be a surprise and he walked away. I believe Jenny came by the table, by only to ask how the food was. Again, our waitress was not very pleasant or friendly. She asked if we would like anymore and we ordered 2 more rolls on top of the 4 rolls and 4 nigiris that we had already eaten, as well as a beer for me. She brought the two rolls out but didn't bring my beer, that is until she brought us the check. She did not ask us if we were finished, she didn't ask if we would like dessert, she just brought the check...and my beer, apparently after she had decided our meal was over. I was going to order some mochis for everyone. Nothing ever did come to the table for my daughter. No one said anything or did anything. As we were leaving the resurant I privately asked the host what had happened and he said that Jenny said they can't really do anything like that, because it's only for birthdays. We spent $140 on dinner and I would have been perfectly willing to spend more on a little brownie with some writing on it or whatever if that's what it took, but I wasn't offered that option. I just wanted her to feel special about this really important achievement that already had the wind taken out of its sails. I never did drink that beer because it came just as they obviously wanted us to leave, but they still charged me for it! We went next door to crumble and dropped a bunch of money on cookies instead since Sakana clearly wasn't too interested in seeing if we needed anything else. If you are wanting to make a night feel special for someone, go somewhere else. It won't happen for you here (I guess unless you say its your birthday?) Its a shame. Very disappointed, and I feel pretty turned off from coming here again after the treatment we received.
Oringinal 5-star review from years ago:
I really love this place! The service is usually really great! The owner is such a friendly lady! And the food!!! Gawwhhhhhh! Hands down, the best sushi we have found in the Salt Lake valley! We were crushed when our old favorite downtown closed due to retirement, so we searched and searched everywhere for our new favorite. This is it! The overnight their tuna every. single. day! No MSG or anything else funky, just delicious, expertly crafted sushi! Their nigiri is perfect every time. The atmosphere is really great as well, I love that the booths are totally separate an private, you can actually have a private...
Read moreI gone here with my girlfriend and honestly the best think was the shrimp tempura(fried shrimp). me and her were the first couple that gone into the restaurant when it opened at 5pm but more people came in soon after. During this time we ordered a couple roles, appetizers, dinner items along with other things such as the "sushi taco". So over all the food just wasn't good, not only for the taste but i ordered a chicken option while she got a steak option. She wanted the steak cooked to medium rare and what we got was not anything i would let her eat. the beef looked rotten and was not anywhere near medium rare and was not warm or hot. we were able to tell it was not freshly cooked. When my plate got to me I noticed an issue right off the back the chicken was cold as well but also very dry. No I can understand if it is hot and a bit dry if it was fresh or slightly over cooked but no you could physically see the chicken and steak was not freshly cooked like it should. me and her like to enjoy our meal and honestly this was one of the biggest disappointments i have had in a long time. I would personally not recommend this place if you want quality food.
detailed about the items the sushi roles we got were one dragon and the other had calamari. The roles were cut supper thin and rice was undercooked
she got salad with her meal and the dressing was so watery you could drink it like water. I got miso soup with mine and it was barley over room temperature. soup should be visibly hot.
we got these weird taco style things where the lettuce is in a circle and the rest is in the middle. It had to much sauce to the point it was pouring out(not joking) and so much fried rice noodle it was like a mountain on top.
the fried calamari was one of the few things i liked mainly due to the sauce we got with my girlfriends meal. the one it came with was good but not great.
Sushi taco was very easy to fall apart in both of our hands and was nearly impossible to pick up at first. it was all veggie which i don't mind but i wish that it was made clear before hand that it was just veggies because that's all we had on ours.
Nothing came out during the time it should have. we were eating the appetizers after we got the main dinner items. I don't know what was wrong with this place when we went a few days ago but it was the worst experience we ever had in a Japanese restaurant of any kind. if it wasn't for my girl I would have sent back the food and demanded a refund. Especially after we found a weird black thing floating...
Read moreHORRIBLE WAITRESS! I come here often because I love the food and usually enjoy the service here, but today I had the worst experience in my life with my waitress. I was sat by a young man that was sweet and helpful, but when it came to my waitress, an older asian lady, she was not helpful! My husband and I took advantage of their 8.99 lunch special and enjoyed 5 beautifully made rolls, but our waitress would constantly stare at us while eating, which made us quite uncomfortable. When it came to paying, we asked if we can use my husband's military discount, but since it was already a discounted meal we couldn't, which was fine! She was staring hard at the screen while we selected our tip. Important note, we like to tip our waiters/waitresses in cash so they can have it directly. We selected 0% tip with intent to give it to her in cash and asked for our receipt as well. She gave us a weird side eye before leaving to grab our receipt and when she came back, she decided to leave us with a slick comment. "Next time I'm going to charge you guys in full" and said something else at the end that we couldn't catch. That left us dumbfounded and we just decided to leave and not tip. I talked to my husband about the situation and we noticed little things beside the staring and slick comment, we ultimately decided that we should let her manager know. I am the type of person to not complain and go about my day. I also always come with respect and a positive attitude. I don't know if she was having a bad day, but that was so uncalled for! We called the store shortly after and was greeted by our waitress again. I politely asked for a manager and was told they weren't in. I asked when they'll be in, she said she didn't know and never knows their schedule, so I asked to speak to the young man that sat me down but got hung up on! I called back, changing my voice this time, asking to speak to the young man. He was super understanding and helpful, overall amazing listening to my experience! I usually don't eat out because I'm a broke college student, but still try my best to tip. Sometimes some people just want to treat themselves and don't have enough to tip and being met with this type of service is just discouraging especially if you are trying to treat yourself or celebrate! I hope to no one experiences what I had with...
