I was really excited to try this new restaurant, and I genuinely hate leaving a negative review, especially for a new business, knowing how much effort it takes to open a restaurant. That said, I’m giving it 2 stars, and even that is because I want to give them grace for being new.
We arrived as a party of 3, including my toddler. The hostess asked if we were okay sitting at a table for 2 with an extra chair. We agreed, assuming they were short on space. But once seated, I noticed two empty tables for four right next to us that remained unused for over 2 hours. It felt like we were unnecessarily crammed in, especially with a small child.
Wait time: We waited 45 minutes just for our appetizer. In areas like Wheaton and Glen Ellyn where families often dine out, that kind of delay doesn’t work well, especially with a toddler. It really affected the overall experience.
Food: The tacos were nothing like what we expected. The photos on their website show traditional tacos (onion and cilantro), and the menu mentioned guacamole, grilled onions, and beans, which I assumed would be on the side. Instead, the tacos came loaded with watery beans directly inside. Within two minutes, the tortillas were soggy probably because they weren’t even grilled or warmed properly. When I asked the waitress about it, she simply said it’s “Sonora style” without any explanation. A little education about the dish would have gone a long way.
Drinks: The drinks were overly sweet and lacked any noticeable alcohol. I ordered one of their cocktails and was surprised to find it topped with whipped cream, something that wasn’t mentioned and made no sense with the flavor of the drink. It felt more like a sugary dessert than a cocktail.
Cleanliness and professionalism: The moment that sealed it for me was when I saw the lady bartender using her fingers to fish something out of a drink. That’s unacceptable and unhygienic.
Service: The staff seemed overwhelmed and in need of training. Our waitress brought all of our entrées while we were still trying to eat our appetizer and on a tiny table with no space. We had to rush through the starter just so they could clear plates to make room.
I truly hope they improve with time because the concept and location have potential. But as it stands, the experience was disappointing and not one I’d...
Read moreWe tried Tequila Limon early on a Friday night (5:30) so it wouldn’t be crowded and were very impressed! We started with strawberry margaritas and we think they were the best we’ve ever had. I know that sounds like an exaggeration but I’m a discerning reviewer and I don’t gush often. The flavor was a rich, ripe and sweet strawberry with sugar rimmed glasses and they were wonderful. We liked the ceviche appetizer but we thought the shrimp and vegetables were diced too small. The flavor was very good though. Gladys, our server was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We enjoyed their small chips and salsa before ordering. We liked the small size of the chips basket because we don’t like to spoil our appetites. The red salsa was very spicy and not chunky. We like chunky salsa so this is the one thing I believe they should change. We ordered the taco entree with both carne asada and Al pastor recipes. The Al Pastor tacos were very flavorful and delicious. The meat in the carne asada tasted bland so we spiced it up with their salsa. The tacos were good. I ordered the surf and turf fajitas and they were very good! The food portions were large for a high end Mexican restaurant and we loved bringing leftovers home for lunch the next day. My wife ordered a peach sangria and it was very good but maybe a little too sweet. Technology problems prevented Gladys from printing out our receipt so I took a picture of her digital screen and all was good. Our entire meal, including 3 cocktails and a 20% tip was $112. This is a great value for the quality and quantity of our food! The atmosphere is very nice too and we will return to try other dishes. I recommend Tequila Limon and encourage...
Read moreThree stars is generous. Overall there is potential but it definitely fell flat for us.
We got the shrimp empanadas, fish tacos and shrimp tacos. All lacked some sort of flavor. The shrimp empanadas were overwhelmed by the fried dough taste. The dipping sauce was good. Both tacos were surprisingly missing flavor. The shrimp ones tasted that guac and cheese. The shrimp were plain. The fish tacos were missing acidity. The tortillas were definitely on the crunchier side for a corn tortilla so they were a bit greasy. For 18 dollars for 3 tacos (and no sides!) I need bursting with flavor.
Salsa verde was good. Chips are an odd texture. But the salsa was served in a huge ramekin but had less than a quarter of it filled. Get a smaller bowl and give more.
My drink was grapefruit juice. Idk where the mezcal was. My husband enjoyed his drink. Our drinks also took a long time to get to us. There was one bartender and she did not seem very experienced at making drinks and talking to the ONE person sitting at the bar. At one point our drinks were made. Our waitress went to grab them. Someone told her our app was ready, she asked them if they would grab it, they told her no. So she put our drinks down and went and got our app and then the bartender finally was the one to bring us our drinks.
Service was slow. At one point of time we thought about leaving. Drinks took ages. Food took a long time.
The space is nicely done though the empty bar in the back is odd…
There are other things on the menu I am interested in (I love seafood). But I’ll give it more time and see if it lasts. I was...
