Zen's Tea House — Restaurant in Whittier

I stopped in while Uptown looking for tea as a coffee alternative but left a bit disappointed. The cup looked nice, but the flavor leaned more toward sweet milk than spice. I was hoping for a strong, gingery turmeric kick, but it came across mild and slightly chalky, with some grit at the bottom. It was also served closer to warm than hot, so it cooled quickly and needed frequent stirring to keep the spices blended.

Service felt slower than expected given there was no line. I waited without much communication, and another couple who arrived after me got their order first. Staff weren’t unfriendly, but they seemed a little disengaged and the counter felt somewhat unorganized.

I like the emphasis on wellness, and the blends sounded great on the menu, but in the cup they didn’t fully deliver. Between the longer wait and the underwhelming drink, I’ll probably try other tea spots...

Upon walking in, you are instantly greeted with a sense of serenity and homeliness. Their selections of loose leaf tea is vast, and they allow you to mix teas if you want to try something new (I mixed rose tea with oolong it was absolutely delicious!) Regina was so knowledgeable and kind to explain to me some of the benefits of the herbal teas, and helped me pick out small batch loose leaf teas for me to take home for me and my husband (a tea to help me with my allergies and a tea that my cigar aficionado husband could pair with his cigars!) with a rose-oolong tea latte, two loose leaf bags, it came out to $25, which is an AMAZING deal! I will definitely be coming back!

Today I decided to take a trip to come see Zen's tea house. I got off work and wanted to surprise my coworkers with some matcha. I always pass by this tea house but never stop by. Today I just felt the urge to just step in. I am very glad I did because I was able to see an old high school friend and also enjoy a conversation about our lives outside of high school. Our journey with God and our family while sampling matcha was a great experience. Thank you for having a welcoming environment and for praying with for my husband who is ill. Until next time!
