I visited this establishment on Friday, June 10. In town for a girls weekend, my friends and I, all UNCW alumnae, thought it would be fun to check out some of the places we frequented when we were younger.
I was horrified to witness the most obvious, flippant, and disgusting display of racism at this bar. As we were exiting, a group of African American women were standing outside. They asked if we had purchased a membership prior to entering. The answer was no, we had not. We had not completed any paperwork or paid any sort of fee that could even be remotely construed as obtaining a membership.
We answered these ladies with a "no." Apparently the young man at the door had told them that this establishment was for members only, and that a membership could only be obtained on weekdays during business hours. While there may have been a legitimate reason for not admitting this group of ladies, a lack of membership obviously was not one of them.
It was exceedingly clear, in my opinion, that this group of ladies was not admitted because of the color of their skin. I asked to speak to the manager because certainly this was not the impression that any business would want to give. The young man at the door was extremely rude and arrogant and clearly overestimated his importance. I honestly believe that he was proud of his behavior. Needless to say, no manager was produced.
The display that I witnessed was appalling. It left me feeling as if I were in a time warp; before the Civil Rights movement, and surely before anyone and everyone could use the internet to review a business.
I understand that this establishment may be "private," but I believe by "private" they must mean racist. Absolutely...
Β Β Β Read moreI donβt write reviews very often but I was very disappointed last night in the door security. My friend and I have been to Goodfellas several times. The new location and we frequented the old. We have never had an issue at the door as we are over age and cause no problems. Last night we had 2 friends ask us to join them there and the door guy letβs my 2 friends in and then tells my friend and I we have to have a membership. We have NEVER been asked to show one or had one. The door guy says that since they moved to that location we must have one. I tell him weβve been coming since they moved and before and have never been told. He says come back 12-5 mon-wed and get one. Meanwhile I ask why he let my 2 friends in. He says the one has a membership and the other is his guest. What the liar didnβt realize is they were with us. My friend immediately says βI have never had a membership and donβt have one nowβ At this point, 2 young girls walk up, hug his neck and walk in. They werenβt asked for a membership, they didnβt even show ID. My friends call him out on it and we leave.
I have had people tell me theyβve had this issue as well and thatβs why they donβt go and I always take up for them because the door guy (same one as last night) has never given us an issue. Until now. I will make sure to spread the word to my law enforcement family as well as anyone else. I have no issue with a membership, I have one to the rooftop bar, where we returned and had a great night, but if itβs required, it needs to be fair across the board. Very disappointed and will...
Β Β Β Read moreI have come to this place almost every weekend with my friends and girlfriend. My girlfriend has short hair and every single time we enter the blonde at the front stops us and try's to make her pay 5 dollars. I have a conversation with her every time explaining that some girls just have short hair. I went last Saturday and she was so rude and once again called out my girlfriend and decided to yell " well how am I supposed to know if she is a girl or a boy" first off that is beyond uncalled for then she continues to be rude about it and made my girlfriend cry. I get it from a distance with the short hair and the way she dress's may throw people off sometimes however as much as we come in and as many times as I have said something it's now an issue. The way it was handled was ridiculous and I had two other employees who witness this event apologize on her behalf to me. My girlfriend refuses to go back because she is so embarrassed and that is really a shame because this was one of our favorite places. I am well aware that the girl at the front has worked there since this place opened so this review probably wont effect her at all however she might need to be refreshed on how to be a decent human because things like this is why it's hard for the LGBT...
