Black Bear Diner - A Hidden Gem in Utah! On my first visit to Utah for a graduation, I stumbled upon Black Bear Diner, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with warm smiles and incredibly friendly service. The staff made me feel right at home, which was exactly what I needed after a long day of celebrations. Now, let's talk about the food—oh my goodness, where do I even start? The portions are absolutely massive! I ordered the classic pancakes which were massive, and was cooked to perfection—crispy on the edges, moist on the inside, and I smothered it in the most delicious syrup. The sides were just as impressive, and I left with a very full belly and leftovers to enjoy later. The atmosphere is cozy, with charming bear-themed decor that adds to the diner’s unique appeal. It's clear that this place is a local favorite, and it's easy to see why. The combination of fantastic service, hearty portions, and mouthwatering food makes Black Bear Diner a must-visit when in Salt Lake City, Utah. I can't wait for my next trip back—this will definitely be my go-to spot!

The service was fast, too fast. The food was thrown together. I got the BLT and it had two pieces of bacon, 2 small tomato’s and one big Romain piece of lettuce. There was more bread that anything. The bread wasn’t toasted enough and way too flat. The fries were limp and in desperate need of more frying. They tasted ok but didn’t help the situation. My wife got the chicken fried steak breakfast. Steak was good and crispy. The potatoes (homestyle) we not cooked long enough, they had no texture. Seemed they rushed the food out with little care. Pancake she got was a “Bisquick” flavor. Not homemade. The waiter didn’t ask how our food was. I think he knew by how much we ate. The carpet around use was filthy. No one caring to clean. The hostess when paying did ask how everything was and when we told her she simple said she was sorry and we then paid for the meal. No attempt to fix the issue or get a manager involved or anything. VERY DISAPPOINTING! Will likely not come back.

Comfort food that wasn't very comforting: We were disappointed with our experience at Black Bear Diner, especially after hearing good things about it. I'm not sure if we caught them on a bad night, but I'm not sure we'll try again. We ordered the Reuben sandwich, the blackened salmon, and a pancake with fruit for our daughter. The sandwich didn't have much flavor and the salmon was overcooked and dry; the bed of sauteed vegetables it came on was probably the best thing we ate. The pancake was fine, so maybe this is more of a breakfast place. The most disappointing thing was the BlackBerry Cobbler Pie. For how large the piece was, there was only 4 berries in the piece. The handful of berries was suspended in a grainy and purple flavorless gel set in a dense and soggy crust. For how good it looked, I was very sad. :(

I have eaten at this Diner on many, many occasions. My parents and I always make it a point to come in every fall for the pumpkin pancakes, however, my love of a good burger has us coming back on a regular basis. I have always left there feeling full, happy and satisfied, until my most recent visit. I was meeting my son there, and was seated at a table where I was in the center of all the traffic, which isn't a bad thing...I wasn't hidden somewhere, I was in plain sight. My son arrived about 15 mins after I was seated. In that time, not one person greeted me, or asked if I was waiting for someone? Would I like something to drink? I don't normally pay attention to the customers/tables around me, respecting other's privacy. But, since I was watching the door for my son's arrival, I noticed a couple, just 2 tables away from me that were served right away...In fact, they had eaten, paid their bill and left the restaurant before I had even gotten a water! I wonder how long I would have sat there, had I not gone and asked for a manger? After 45 mins since my arrival, I gave up waiting, and told them we came here to eat, not to watch others eat! Anyway, we placed our order, got drinks...the food took another 15 mins, but finally we got to eat. Not even ONE PERSON checked back with us to see how we were doing...or, is the food tasting okay? Would you like to order anything else? I have always BRAGGED about this restaurant, and this particular location, but never again. I honestly don't care if I ever go back. I tipped my server $10, for the simple fact that she did serve us, and she was stationed on the other side of the restaurant! WHERE WAS OUR WAITRESS? I am still really upset...I live in NSL, and constantly asking my family to go there, but yeah, I suppose we will have to find a better restaurant that values my hard...

Food at this place is easily 5 stars. Service is a 2. The servers are very kind and the manager is excellent but I feel there is a lack of training. I come here often, at both busy times and incredibly slow times, and let me tell you I'll never order a drink other than water, because you'll be lucky to get a refill. The due diligence on tables suck and there seems to be a lack of team work among servers. I have sat at the counter with a empty cup of coffee and have had every server walk right past. I have sat at a table and waited 10 minutes just for my server to great me and never see them again after the food has been delivered. The manager has checked in with me more than any server and that's why he is awesome. I stopped ordering drinks because I got tired of tracking down my server and asking for refills.... so here is some advice I'm passing along from my time as a server. Whomever seats the customer, ask if they know what they want to drink and get if for them or pass it along to their server. To every server making sure drinks are full is everyone's job even if it's not your section. Do refill rounds every 5 minutes with coffee pot in hand. Servers your customers should be greated within 2 minutes of being seated. They should be check on within two minutes after they get their food to see if there are any problems or of they need something. Before you drop a check ask if they want any desert, make sure to offer one or two of your favorites. And for the love of all that is holy stop bringing me condiments that are two drops from empty, "marry" your condiments or bring a full one along side the near empty one.... let me finish by re-stating, the food here is delicious and I will continue coming...

Good food, terrible service. Seated promptly but ignored for quite some time. I was ready to walk out but my wife flagged down someone that looked, but did not act like management. We then waited longer while she attempted to get someone to wait on us. Place was not busy, late afternoon/early evening way before rush on a Saturday. Plenty of open tables. Hostess? Attempted to put us at a table by the kitchen. I asked for a booth at the window. There we plenty of folks working; at least a half dozen servers or more and 3 hostesses (one who I think was the manager). Way to many, but it did get busier before we left since we were there soooooooooo long. Waitress was unfarmilier with menu and i had to point out items my son's meal came with that she did not ask about. My meal was incorrect and had to be sent back. Our water nor my son's soda was refilled. Set ups were done by a random hostess that appeared out of nowhere. 1st hostess and server didn't pick up on that. We had our menus folded up and obviously waiting for service for a full 10-15 min as almost the entire crew went back and forth past us. Good thing the food was good. I've been to another location so i knew what to expect. This place is new but not brand new. I'm blaming our experience on management which seemed incompetent or inexperienced. Server should have been more on top of things she did not have that many tables when we first arrived or even when we left. We will return but will handle things differently. For what we paid which is on a par of what we pay at other more fancy places service should have been a...
