Wantan Punta Carretas — Restaurant in Montevideo

This place has great "bones"! No, not spareribs sadly but an I testing design and decor.

The kitchen has trouble sending out 4 dishes at the same time for a family table which is surprising since the food has the feel of a professional kitchen.

For a city/country with almost no Asian cuisine except for cream cheese filled sushi, Wantan is unique, reasonable and quite acceptable given the lack of comparables.

The food is pretty authentic if chow mein and chop suey rank as such but it was good and a pleasant change. The orange chicken and fried rice were very good and clean tasting, the noodle dish was so so a bit heavy and bland ( honestly it was all bland but,hey, were in Uruguay and spicing is still quite unknown). The tamarind pork was really not good at all, overcooked pork and sticky,sweet.

Service was friendly and obliging but the young staff obviously is totally unfamiliar with the food they are serving so nice but unable to help or understand.

Full circle, I'll go back to a pleasant,nicely decorated restaurant with quite good Chinesesque cuisine and hope they spawn some others and the competition creates more authentic...

Agree with other reviewers - best Chinese restaurant (at least, most like an American one) in Montevideo. Very cool place, nice atmosphere, good staff, and their own craft beer. To get better Chinese food you probably will have to order from one of the people who cook in their kitchen, you’ll run into them on Instagram eventually. But if you just feel like Chinese tonight, this is your jam. Expensive (like everything in Uruguay) but really good. We had fried won tons, all three kinds of dumplings, pork lo mein, fried rice, and Mongolian beef. Mongolian beef was actually a little spicy. Everything was really good. La decoración espectacular, pese al detalle de algunas aguas vivas visiblemente muertas en peceras que parecen demasiado pequeñas. La atención del mozo que nos tocó muy bien, súper atento, aunque escaso personal para un restaurante lleno. En cuanto a la comida, nos desilusionó, dada la inversión en ambientación, la ubicación y la prensa, podrían esforzarse mucho más en formas buenos cocineros de una calidad mucho más alta de cocina china que en Montevideo falta. No nos gustó la carta -típicos platos de cualquier Delivery de barrio- ni la calidad de la comida, los arrollados primavera puro aceite y un relleno nada rico, los fideos croquantes parecían recién sacados del paquete crudos y la salsa de gusto raro, no lo comimos, avisamos y rescatamos que no lo cobraron. Lo único o pasable fueron los wonton. Podrían lograr mucho mejores resultados. Hemos comidos en restaurantes chinos en otras ciudades como Buenos Aires, Paris y New York muy superiores y a precios similares. Este era cómo comer la típica comida de Delivery chino de medio pelo pero de peor calidad, en un lugar mindisimo. Una pena. Tardaron también mucho en traer algo para comer, y al final podrían dar los clásicos “galletitas de la suerte”. No se, meterle mas “onda” Sería bueno también que el encargado o dueño que está en la barra se esmere en su vestimenta, deje el look surfista para algo más acorde a la deco del lugar. Una pena también que no tengan opciones de tragos, solo cervezas. Llegamos muy entusiasmados, aunque nos fuimos desilusionados.
