I found this restaurant on Google while looking for a good restaurant near our hotel. This one sounded good, and it turned out that it was. Also real quick, our waitress was fantastic. She explained each dish to us and showed us how it is usually eaten. She was great! Our meal came with some complementary crackers and a sweet chili paste. I tried it and have to be honest that it wasn’t anything that I would normally like, but I could see other people liking it. I tried a little bit and then left it alone. We started with a banh xeo appetizer. Three little banh xeos and a peanut sauce and a pepper fish sauce. The banh xeo had pork and shrimp inside and they were fantastic. There weren’t so big, like the ones I usually have. I could eat them like little tacos. I loved them. My girlfriend’s main dish was some type of fried fish and some noodles. She said it was pretty good. I did not try it, but it did look good. My dish consisted of some Vietnamese cold cuts, some Vietnamese meatballs, a couple fried eggs, and a small cut of steak. It was accompanied by three little baguettes in order to make tiny sandwiches. I really enjoyed this dish, mainly because I am a fiend for sandwiches! The view from our table looked out over the street and the beach beyond. It was very nice to sit and watch it all go by while we had a couple of beers and waited for our food. There was a set-up in the middle of the restaurant for a morning buffet for the hotel guests (the restaurant is on the second or third floor of a hotel called Haian). We are coming back to Da Nang in a few days and are contemplating staying in this hotel. That way we can enjoy more...
Read moreI only stumbled upon this place in Da Nang by pure happenstance and almost at the end of my holiday, after which, I made it my mission to have lunch and dinner for the last couple of days. Because the menu was broad, the options were galore, and finding something to my liking was not an issue at all.
It was a pleasure to witness how Cá Gỗ have embraced the true Vietnamese culture, from lighting a candle to having everything on the menu as truly authentic Vietnamese food, even breaking it down from North, Central, and the South of Vietnam. The first couple of pages on the menu briefly explained the Vietnamese culture, and for a foreigner who was keen to learn and embrace the culture, it was priceless. The food was exquisite, and my taste buds were in heaven, and I could still sense the taste hours after my meal(s).
The highlight of Cá Gỗ was Alice – she was humble, respectful, and a delightful host. Alice was very knowledgeable about every item on the menu, and learning my taste preferences, she made some excellent suggestions but also offering plenty of options. I’m happy to report that I was so glad that I listened to her suggestions, as without her I don’t think I would’ve gotten to experience the true culture of Vietnam.
Staff in general were well-trained and Cá Gỗ have invested in the right personnel, where they provided helpful tips on places to avoid / visit, but also finding me and returning my AirPods when I accidentally left it on the table.
If you are keen to experience authentic Vietnamese food and their culture, it’s a no-brainer that you drop everything and head...
Read moreWent for lunch with my family. They sat us at a window table to enjoy to ocean/beach view and the service was very good from the start. They provide a complimentary warm tea. There is an extensive menu with all types of combinations to allow you to try a variety of items or individual items if you are not that hungry. We tried their garlic fried shrimp and that was very well prepared with lots of fried shallots and a fresh but flavorful taste, Hanoi spring rolls which were large and tasty but very greasy and they did not come with any veggies just a fish sauce. Their beef pho was really large, loaded with meat and they provided plenty of the traditional veggies and herbs to accompany it. Their seafood fried rice came with a soup and a small salad of lettuce, tomato’s and cucumber. While I thought the presentation was good, there was very little seafood in this rice and mostly veggies. Still prepared well but more a veggie fried rice with corn and peas. Had a white wine and a beer for the table which was served cold - although I did have to ask for the beer twice. I will say there was a smell that lingered even after we changed tables. We changed tables as the attentive staff realized we may need a lather table to accommodate the many dishes we ordered to share. The smell was almost as if someone had wet clothes on when they sat in the fabric chairs and it turned musty. Overall a good experience with some tasty food and...
