my first homemade meal back home after 12 years and i came to nhà anh (well my mom is still out of town and i’m not in mood for cooking). the space is relaxing and quieter than the majority of Sài Gòn. i saw some green plants around as well.
i ordered set menu for one because i didn’t want to choose. set menu came with salad (beef, buttercup lettuce, standard Viet style salad dressing, some peanut and fried shallot) fish or meat main dish (braised?) a soup (canh) of the day, today was stuffed bitter melon - one of my favorite veggie dish - quick stir fried or boiled, i chose boiled okra with fermented tofu dipping sauce. i really like the dipping sauce.
the seasoning here is lighter (less salty) than other foods i had in SG for the past 3 meals, truly like homemade foods as the name suggested.
i also had nước mía lau - i don’t know what it’s in english, some types of sugar cane? it must have been years since the last time i had it.
dessert i got was coconut jelly/agar. it was firmer than my liking, i expected it was soft in a small young coconut, but it wasn’t. still tasted good, just my personal reference. the dessert was served in a high glass for ice cream which made it a bit harder for me to scoop.
there was a hiccup during my meal but the nice young lady took care of that professionally and kindly. i also loved how the staff here spoke even softer than my voice lol
one nice surprise nhà anh served brown rice. i’m not sure which kind, people who used to white (stickier) rice might not like it but i prefer brown rice. it is a bit different than my usual calrose brown rice but it’s still good. i definitely will...
Read moreA friend referred me to this place and I’m very glad I came. For context, I’m writing this review as a Westerner (USA). First, the setting & ambience is unique, artsy and antiquely warm. I enjoyed the contemporary American pop music playing softly in the background. Second, the food, what can I say other than amazing? The #1 recommendation? chicken wings! But not your typical wings. These were perfectly fried with hints of coriander & garlic. Favorites also included the shaken beef, the flavorful vegetable curry, the special deep fried shrimp with honey tamarind sauce and the caramel fish in clay pot. As my special mentions, I have 2, the soft tofu with pork and shrimp topped with egg and the garlic stir fried young pumpkin buds. The menu is quite diverse and I’m sure whether you are a local or a foreigner, you will love the food.
I had a chance to meet the owners and also learned the restaurant not only exists to serve delicious savory food, but also as sort of a job incubator, a place for young people to learn a variety of skills, including customer service, although you’d never know it by the level of attention the staff provides. Supporting a place where helping young people get a start is a bonus, so of course I tipped accordingly (a little extra).
If you have a chance, stop by, the experience will definitely be worth going a little out of the way. This is a hidden gem of a place you will remember among all the places...
