The Freedom Square or Liberty Square, also known as Opera Square and Theatre Square until 1991, is a town square located in the centre district of Yerevan, Armenia. The square is part of the Yerevan Opera Theater complex, located just to the south of the main opera building, between the opera park and the Swan lake. Along with the Republic Square, the Freedom Square is one of the two main squares in central Yerevan. It is bordered with four streets: Tumanyan Street, Teryan Street, Sayat Nova Avenue and Mashtots Avenue. The statues of writer Hovhannes Tumanyan and composer Alexander Spendiaryan are located in the square.

Great square, lovely cafes and atmosphere around and lots of kids riding bikes and toy bars bring spirit to the square, plus the nice statues and opera add to the look. However the area could be really improved if the cement was changed into tile, added some bushes, benches, trash cans and nice street lights down the square from the entrances into the square to the opera, and made the vendors renting out bikes and running carnival games at the edges of the square more organized to make the area look nicer. Basically great place that can be even better.

On the northern side of the city and one of the more known landmarks, this square houses the opera and ballet house of Armenia -- the cultural epicenter of the country. You'll find families and tourists here all day. Later in the afternoon and the evening there will be kids playing with battery operated cars driving around the square. It is aso surrounded by cafes and restaurants -- albeit, these are highly priced. Still worth a visit though!

Nice place to visit with a beautiful round shaped opera house building (not sure). This is where all the major city events are held. Quite touristy but also good to see some locals and socialize. Good for coming with kids as there are lots of entertainment for them. Area is walkable in general and you can get to other attractions from here easily.

Одно из моих любимых мест в Ереване! Господи, сколько же воспоминаний связано с ним... Еще в годы советской власти, когда в стране наблюдался подъем национального самосознания граждан, именно здесь, на этой площади, проходили многочисленные митинги с требованиями свобод и справедливости. Наверное, именно это и предопределило в дальнейшем само название этой площади. Сегодня, площадь Свободы заметно преобразились. В некогда просторных и уютных зеленых зонах как грибы после дождя выросли многочисленные кафешки, стиснувшие полукольцом гениальное архитектурное творение великого ереванского творца Александра Таманяна - здание Государственного академического театра оперы и балета, являющимся символом Еревана. Практически в любое время суток здесь многолюдно. Однако, вечерами кажется, что все ереванцы и гости города торжественным маршем направляются на площадь Свободы. - Где встретимся? - На Опере! - так говорят горожане. И, действительно, сегодня Опера - это место деловых встреч и свиданий, дружеских посиделок и любовных историй...

To suppress the demonstrations the square was closed down several times within 1988 by Soviet police and military forces
