This park has a special history․ In 2012, the municipality has decided to build boutique shops in the park. For 3 months, citizens, mostly the youth, were protesting to save the park. During the struggle, many clashes with police took place, but eventually, after months of 24 hour blockade, the government agreed to stop the construction and the shops were removed. The park was also renewed. This struggle, known as Mashtots Park struggle, had a huge impact in development of civil society in Armenia.
