The museum houses a vast collection of artifacts, variety of bronze objects, such as weapons, jewelry, dating back to the Stone Age. Exhibits cover everything from Armenia's earliest civilizations to its modern-day independence. The museum also features the world's oldest known leather shoe-The Areni-1 Shoe dated back to 3500 BCE. Another highlight of the museum is the collection of ancient artifacts from the Kingdom of Urartu. The History Museum of Armenia is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about the country's rich and complex history and it is situated at Republic Square. The museum is well maintained and every artifact is well labeled in English. The ticket price is 2500 AMD (~$6) and English speaking guides are available. We opted for a guide because I was a bit curious about history and I wanted to grasp as much knowledge as I can. The guide was nice. I have deducted one star as half of the museum was under renovation but it had given me a lot.

The History Museum of Armenia in Yerevan (established 1920) is a compact yet captivating journey through the nation’s rich tapestry—archaeology, ethnography, numismatics, and modern history—all under one roof. Located in Republic Square, it’s ideal for a leisurely 1–2 hour visit, especially on weekday mornings when it’s quiet. This museum offers a concise, well-preserved snapshot of Armenia’s millennia-old heritage. If you’ve already explored churches and monasteries, it enriches your understanding with archaeology, art, and historical depth. Despite its size, it’s consistently rated a top museum in Yerevan.

This museum only gets one star. It's exhibits rank as some of the best in the world, but the attitude of the staff is totally disgraceful ! Yesterday I visited the museum only to be escorted out as the result of a power blackout. Not with a torch but the light of one of the members of staffs mobile phone. I returned today, wanting to view the first floor and I asked the cashier for consideration in admission fees, today I was accompanied by my wife. This total excuse for a human being erupted in a totally abusive manner accusing me of lying initially, saying there was not a blackout and when corrected by her colleagues lied about the blackout and said it only lasted for 2 minutes. All I was really after was an apology and some genuine concern for the situation I found myself in. In short it was quite dangerous. There are too many staff. There are no direction indicators showing you which way to view the exhibitions. Only abrupt staff who bark at you and shoo you in the desired direction. One saving grace was the delightful young lady who served us in the museum shop on the ground floor. Obviously an educated young lady who understands respect. Please reeducate the cashier, her demeanour is totally disgraceful . Give your staff torches for the next black our. Reduce and reeducate the floor grunters and please some direction signs.

I recently visited the History Museum of Armenia, and unfortunately, my experience was far from what I expected. When booking a guided tour in English, I was not informed that a significant portion of the museum is closed due to ongoing construction, which was quite disappointing.

Upon arrival, we were assigned a 19-year-old German volunteer, fresh out of high school, to guide us through the ancient history of Armenia. While I respect the enthusiasm of young volunteers, it was frustrating to realize that someone with limited knowledge and no professional background in history was leading our paid tour.

When we requested a historian to replace the guide, we were told that an expert could be available only to answer questions, not to take over the tour. This vague offer led my foreign companion to dismiss the suggested "help" entirely, as it didn't address our concerns about the quality of the experience.

To add to the frustration, the museum refused to offer a refund, claiming they didn’t have a refund policy in place.

Is this really how we want to represent the rich history of Armenia to visitors? Relying on underqualified volunteers rather than professionals undermines the depth and importance of our...
