This complex is worth the time to explore, as the tour includes the state rooms (Residenz) and the Salzburg Cathedral as well as a museum. There is an audioguide that will provide a lot of good information about this site, which was the court for the prince archbishops in the 16th and 17th centuries. We had bought the Salzburg card, which is a good value and allowed us into this for free. There was an organ concert going on in the cathedral, so we were not going to be able to go into it. But we were told to just wait five more minutes (during which we enjoyed hearing the organ) and then they allowed us into the organ loft just as the performance had wrapped up. It was a good view of the cathedral from up there. We also saw lots of great artwork, and we enjoyed seeing the ornate architecture and décor in the state rooms. The history of the place is really impressive. For instance, Mozart performed concerts here in his youth. You'll definitely get the most out of it if you listen to...
Read moreI have been in Salzburg now 39 times, and it is the first time I went here - and I was absolutely amazed!! First I went through the rooms and thought "Was that it?" then I discovered the sign for the panoramaterrasse, and from there the experience really took off. Be at the balcony listening to the music inside the Dom, watching the Salzburger Dom from balconies and be closer to the amazing roof, see all the beautiful things that were in the museum...... I think I spent close to 3 hours there, and could have spent many more if I wanted to know the details about all the things in there.
BUT FOR TOURISTS REMEMBER! I experied some pretty unbehaved tourists on my way. Remember that you are visiting culture heritage from 1628 in an Unesco heritage. Remember to respect that, follow the guidelines from the guards, and respect that it says several places that you are not allow to...
Read moreWe very much enjoyed the exhibits and getting to dress up in period garb, but starting a half hour before the listed closing time of 5 pm, museum staff were acting incredibly rude and telling us it was “not possible” to see entire rooms/sections of the museum. My family and I love museums and plan accordingly to give ourselves enough time to take everything in. The DomQuartier website says to allow for 1.5 hours, and we entered at 3 pm knowing we probably would take a bit longer. If they wanted us to be out by 4:30 instead of 5, then they should’ve listed the closing time as such. It completely soured the whole experience to have museum staff hovering, nearly yelling at us that the museum would close in 2 minutes when in fact there were 25 minutes until 5 o’clock, and pushing us to exit rooms and closing...
