Stayed here for the Krampus Run Festival, which usually happens on 5th and/or 6th December. It was the perfect location for seeing the Krampus Run, as well as visiting the Christmas Market and visiting the Old Town.||Situated on a reasonably quiet side street, it was easy to get to and quiet at night.||We stayed in a "cheap" room on the 4th floor which had the most beautiful view across the river and towards the mountains.||The breakfast room was small for the size of the hotel, but we could always get a seat within a couple of minutes. Selection was good, including vegan milk and butter. Hot items were sausages, bacon and scrambled egg (which was delicious!).||The room we were in was small, but we only needed it for sleeping. The room and the bathroom temperatures can be controlled by radiators, which was good for maintaining an ideal temperature.||We used the sauna one night, which you need to give an hour notice for (to warm it up). The sauna seems to be new and in good condition, but the changing rooms and showers are in need of some TLC. The sauna is much cooler than a Finnish sauna, operating at 60 degrees!||There is a cinema under the hotel, which was showing a current film. If you book direct via the hotel website, you get a free ticket each. If not, it's 7 Euros each. There are about three showings a day, with one in English.||In terms of things to do, would recommend visiting the Fortress and St Peter's Church. Both are stunning. The views from the top of the Fortress are great! We saw a marionette puppet show one evening, which was ok, but probably quite expensive for what it is. Mirabell Palace was a little underwhelming. Maybe if you're a fan of The Sound of Music you'll enjoy it, but it wasn't that exciting.||The Krampus Run reached the Old Town at about 19:00 on 5th December. Try and find a viewing spot, at least 30 minutes before hand, in front of the stage by the Cathedral. Failing that, people will form a route that the Krampus will follow. Prepare for it to get busy, people to push, and people to be generally rude! But embrace it, stand your ground, and enjoy it when about 50 Krampus parade past.||The best thing we visited (in my eyes) was the Augustinerbräu-Kloster Mülln Brewery. As you enter, you grab a ceramic beer mug and clean it under taps. You then pay your money (about 3.5 Euros for 500ml) and a man fills your mug direct from a wooden barrel in just a few seconds. You can then take a seat in one of 4 amazing halls (Hall 2 was my favourite). Grab some food (good selection), bring your own food, play cards, have a chat, and grab more beer. Repeat until you are done. Excellent atmosphere, and...
Read moreThis is a 2 star hotel at best. Yes, it's from 1342 and has some "charm" due to that fact, and a decent location, but there are much nicer places with even better locations that are good hotels...I'm looking at you, Radisson Blu. We booked a "junior suite", which was good because you could barely turn around in a regular room. However, the old, old mattresses are not on a box spring or anything, just a frame, so they sag terribly. Feels like you are sleeping in a hammock, although not as comfortable as a nice hammock. The pillows are falling apart and frankly, disgusting. There is zero interest in service or even basic customer acknowledgement. Housekeeping is a joke. Our housekeeper managed to forget to clean the shower, which needed it, as it didn't drain well, so you were left with ankle deep soapy water. When it finally drained it was soapy and slippery...but it was never cleaned. She did manage to go through our closet, however, as she moved some things we had IN the closet to OUT of the closet. Not sure why she was investigating the interior of our closet at all, but she did. And best of all, no A/C (which is common) but no screens on the windows either, so you had to leave them open all night to get some air (the front desk said this was our air conditioning). Well, our room was on the street, so we listened to noise from the bar below us, people roaming the streets until about 2am, and the church bells. They tolled once at a quarter past the hour, twice at half past, 3 times at 3/4 past the hour, and then on the hour...8 times for 8am/pm, 9 times for 9am/pm, etc. Oh yes, and as soon the first church finished chiming, the other 4 would set off in quick succession. So if you must stay here, and we don't recommend it, bring ear plugs and eyeshades if you want any chance of a minimal amount of sleep. Worst hotel I've ever experienced and in no one's book is this...
Read moreHonestly how this hotel is rated 4 stars is beyond me. ||We had a ‘junior suite’ & yes, there were separate bedrooms for my son & ourselves. However the room was rundown & worn, unlike the web site photos. ||The A/C was a plug in variety that was too loud to use whilst sleeping at 55 decibels. It also didn’t do too much to cool the room when in use. Couldn’t imagine staying in Summer. ||The bathroom was tiny with nowhere to put toiletries. The bathtub did not seal with the plug so was unusable. No hair conditioner provided. Very dangerous to get in & out of the bath/shower as no rail. We were continually given 2 towels even though there are 3 of us. The hair dryer was one of those awful wall ones that made it impossible to style hair. ||Housekeeping didn’t even go upstairs when they ‘serviced’ the room. Although perhaps they did, as there were long black hairs on the stairs. However upstairs bed was not made. ||Kettle only worked if you held the button down. ||The breakfast area was so hot & stifling that I couldn’t stay there. Zero air flow. This is when it was only 19 or 20C outside. ||The view to the castle was ok. Didn’t use the balcony as it had no privacy from the neighbours. ||Wifi was slow. ||Extremely disappointing stay. Upon checkout we weren’t even asked if we had a nice stay. That was probably...
