The current structure was completed in the 17th century under the direction of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. • Archbishops of Salzburg used Domplatz for processions and important religious events.

Domplatz is a central and spacious plaza located in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town, directly in front of the impressive Salzburg Cathedral. The square is surrounded by historic landmarks, including the Archbishop’s Residence and St. Peter’s Abbey, which add to its charm and make it a focal point for the city’s baroque architecture and cultural heritage.

At the center of the square stands the Maria Immaculata statue, a striking feature that adds a sense of grandeur to the space. During my visit in the winter, I noticed the statue was sealed off with a glass panel. The glass gave the plaza a unique, modern touch while still allowing visitors to appreciate the statue’s elegance.

While Domplatz is beautiful and has a lot to offer, it feels a bit smaller compared to some of the other nearby plazas in Salzburg, such as Residenzplatz. Despite its size, it’s still a pleasant place to take in the surroundings, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it a great spot to pause and enjoy the historic beauty...
