The Vermählungsbrunnen (Marriage Fountain) is a beautiful Baroque fountain located in Vienna’s Stadtpark, near the Wiener Konzerthaus. Completed in 1744, it was designed by the sculptor Georg Raphael Donner to celebrate the marriage of Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa. The fountain is adorned with intricate sculptures and features a central allegorical figure of Hymen, the Greek god of marriage, surrounded by several other symbolic figures representing virtues like love and happiness. The fountain’s elegant design and its historical significance make it a lovely stop for those exploring Stadtpark. It is an example of Vienna’s rich Baroque heritage and a reminder of the city’s royal history. The Vermählungsbrunnen adds charm to the park, offering visitors a peaceful and picturesque spot to enjoy.

One of the interesting things to see at Hoher Markt is the Marriage Fountain (Vermählungsbrunnen), an 18th-century Baroque style fountain and statue arrangement situated in the centre of the square. Here you can see an allegorical composition of figures made of white marble. In the centre is a priestly figure overlooking a man and woman touching hands. There are four columns supporting a decorative bronze crown-like structure above them. Fountain basins were expectedly empty during my early March visit. Note: Another interesting attraction to view at Hoher Markt is the Anker Clock on the south end of the square. This is an elaborate early 20th-century clock that is also enjoyable to see when spending time in this area of Vienna.

The Vermahlungsbrunnen is a fountain in Hoher Markt, dedicated to the marriage of the Virgin Mary. It’s one of the most unusual dedication in Christian iconography I can think of, and the fountains is as monumental as it is unusual. It also strange that the fountain is more of a monument than a fountain as water takes up very little of the fountain. The fountain depicts the marriage of Mary to Joseph underneath a circular colonnade of four columns, with angels standing guard at each of the columns. This fountain is worth a look as there are also several monuments, museums and other attractions close by.
