Vermählungsbrunnen — Attraction in Vienna

Completed in 1744, it was designed by the sculptor Georg Raphael Donner to celebrate the marriage of Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa. One of the interesting things to see at Hoher Markt is the Marriage Fountain (Vermählungsbrunnen), an 18th-century Baroque style fountain and statue arrangement situated in the centre of the square.

Here you can see an allegorical composition of figures made of white marble. In the centre is a priestly figure overlooking a man and woman touching hands. There are four columns supporting a decorative bronze crown-like structure above them. Fountain basins were expectedly empty during my early March visit.

The Vermahlungsbrunnen is a fountain in Hoher Markt, dedicated to the marriage of the Virgin Mary. It’s one of the most unusual dedication in Christian iconography I can think of, and the fountains is as monumental as it is unusual. It also strange that the fountain is more of a monument than a fountain as water takes up very little of the fountain.

The fountain depicts the marriage of Mary to Joseph underneath a circular colonnade of four columns, with angels standing guard at each of the columns.
