I was very disappointed tonight. I went there to purchase two bags of seaweed which in each bag has 10 seaweed packs. The prices definitely have gone up but not what I was upset about. They listed the prices on each bag as $4.99 and the signage on the wall also said $4.99. This kind of product they usually don’t tax on and if they did it wouldn’t be that much more. I was happy with the price but once I reached the cashier they said no it’s not the correct price. The sales clerk put the wrong prices which wasn’t true. I came and purchased this product many times. They even corrected it on their system when I came the first time. The second time it was the same thing charging me more $6.77 but the cashier was the same person and she only charged me $5. Today I was charged again for $6.77. It was one of the cashiers that was there the first time and she said it’s not the correct price that the salesclerk made a mistake it’s actually $6.77. I told her the signage and on the package says $4.99. She was so mean and decided to speak to my mom in English when we were speaking Chinese. She said “do you want to buy it or not”. We decided to pass up on the product. It has been over a month that the product has been listed as $4.99. I bet if I go there again tomorrow the price sign will still be the same but they will charge depending on the person which isn’t fair and is unkind. Please be careful on your purchases because the prices could be changed for no reason once you cash out. **photos were taken the next day. Nov 30th and guess what it still says $4.99 and it has been restocked full and each individual package has the price of $4.99 as well.

The venerable KAI WEI Supermarket on the South East side of Spadina and Dundas Streets, is a great vast emporium, showcasing outside its offerings of Western and Asian fruits and vegetables wrapping around to Grange Street, and its international supermarket wares, meats and live fish in its spacious interior, adding a Bitcoin machine for crypto-shoppers. The prices are inexpensive, the items fresh (can it be otherwise...) & the checkout super fast with a small army of razor sharp cashiers.

Good. One of the Chinese supermarkets in this area. Cheaper price than regular groceries store. I like it. Diverse food, especially Asian vegetables, foods and spices. Apart from Chinese brands, I have found many Vietnamese and Korean foods here. This is a Chinese supermarket so only about 50% of staff know English. But they're friendly. A pity is the late opening hours (9:00 am) and early closing. Why not open an hour earlier (8:00 am) and close a little later? :)

What the store owner did to me was completely unacceptable. Here is what happened.

I walked in to buy sesame paste, it was $3 and when I went to the cashier to pay for my purchase, I asked for no bag. So I put the item in my pocket. After I finished paying, a woman(someone told me she's the owner) saw me and aggressively grabbed my wrist and walked me over to an area. At first I was in shock. While she pulled me to an area I said that I had the receipt, I paid for it, but she still didn't believe me. She forcibly opened my purse, yanked my pockets and touched me with her filthy hands. I showed her the receipt and she asked who checked you out? I point to her the cashier who checked me out and he cashier said to her in Chinese that I didn't want a bag but I paid for it. But I was still furious. I screamed at her for her wrong accusation, and purposely caused a scene in front of the whole entire store. I said to her she assaulted me, this is battery, what she did was wrong. I demanded a refund and did get my refund but I did shopped here a couple of times in the past and she couldn't offer me any compensation.

I am absolutely traumatized right now. I am writing this about 2 hours after the incident and I am still shaking with fear and I didn't stop crying for 2 hours straight.

The wrongly shoplifting accusation happened today, January 28, 5:20 pm.

All she offered me in the end was a half assed "sorry." A half assed sorry isn't gonna make up for the wrong accusation you just did to me. How could she target someone like me, who is this young innocent looking girl. Her reason for accusing me, she said, is because I put my item in my pocket and it wasn't in a shopping bag. That is the most retarded reason I have ever heard.

And since she doesn't speak English, it was extremely hard to communicate with her. I don't know what steps I can take to resolve this because this is absolutely unacceptable. I hope someone sees this review and offers me a solution. Because his is clearly a waste of my time having to deal with her dumb childish action when I have other better things to do.

I can tell she is an immigrant and doesn't understand a thing about...

This is one of the best supermarkets around with live seafood, dried goods, sauces, frozen good etc at a more affordable price. They sell really cheap fruits in season below what the western supermarket sells but do take note that they are pretty much sitting at the border between ripe and spoiling but it is well worth the price.

They do sell really fresh fish (whether alive or dead) but you will need to know how to select fish, some of the fish may have been dead a while longer compared to the other same fishes in the same area. The fish in the tanks are mainly Tilapia (a type of freshwater fish which has a slightly muddy taste so if you are not into this, it will taste bad) which are super fresh since they are still swimming in the tanks. I have steamed golden pomfret and sea bass from here before and they were super fresh and nice.

They do have a big fresh meats area where they have lean pork, pork ribs, beef shank, beef short ribs, mutton etc and they can process it for you on the spot. You can actually get the lean meat to be minced for you at the price of the lean meat with an additional 20 cents (as of the writing). Of late the minced meat price has been rising so I'm switching out to other parts for cooking.

They have a wide range of noodles, fresh and dried from Vietnam, Thailand, China and even Taiwan.

All in all this is a great supermarket where you can get value for money groceries but don't expect any special good service. The customers here know what they are here for and service is kind of unnecessary (I'm happy to pay lower prices for better groceries less the service, so...
