Famous square in the center of Valparaiso surrounded by beautiful historical buildings and a big monument to Arturo Prat. It's location makes it an ideal place from where to start a walk around Valparaiso and get to one of the many nearby funiculars ("ascensor"). One building on the square is particularly striking: the South American Steamship Company building, which is comprised of an old lower part, topped by a very modern and sleek upper part, reminiscent of Zaha Hadid architecture. It’s beautifully nestled among some important historical buildings and sits right at the base of a couple of the city’s iconic cable cars. From here, you can walk along the waterfront, hop on a boat, or just take in the view. When I visited on a Saturday, there was a charming little craft fair happening, adding even more color and life to the plaza. Interesting occurance, when we tried to take a picture of the Navy memorial, someone, a guard, walked up and blocked the picture, then another guy came up and offered to have the guy move put of the way for a couple mill pesos. The restaurants send their staff out and hassle you to bring you to their place somewhat aggressively. you must know Spanish to ask what kind of place it is. Otherwise go north out...
